Chapter One

Mississippi, 1970

The car was coming up the gravel road.

'Mom, are we there yet? I'm hungry'.

'Not now'.

'But, if Dad was here...'.

'Hush!'.

Then the boy was silent.

'Daniel'.

'Yes, Mom'.

'You can explore the house if you like'.

'It's fine, Mom'.

'But, I will have to pay the delivery men. Go into the woods'.

'The woods'.

'Yes, the woods. Do I have to repeat myself'.

'No'.

She stopped driving.

Daniel took off his seatbelt, and opened the passenger-side door.

Then he ran to the front door.

As he did so, he heard the sound of screaming.

When he looked back, all he saw was dark shadows.

The girl was smiling at him.

'Isn't it nice'.

'Sorry'.

'The darkness'.

'Oh, right. I hadn't noticed it before'.

'I'm Rosemary Kincaid. You're new here'.

'Yeah, I am. Mom is too busy. Daniel Byers'.

'The dark is coming'.

'And, the point is...'.

'Bloodline...'.

Daniel froze.

'Bloodline'.

'Yes, my bloodline. Of course, others before you weren't so scared of me'.

'I'm not afraid of you. Why should I be?'.

'Because I'm a vampire'.

'I don't believe in vampires'.

'We'll see, Daniel Byers; we'll see'.

And she disappeared.

'Who were you talking to?', Margaret Byers asked.

'A girl called Rosemary Kincaid. She lives in the woods', Daniel answered.

'That's nice', Margaret said.

'Yeah, with her parents', Daniel said.

Then he walked inside, as rain started to pour heavily.

The bedroom was in the right of the small hallway.

Daniel flicked on the light.

Then the power went out.

'Daniel! Daniel! I can't see!', Margaret cried out.

It was an hour before the power came back on.

By 7:00 PM, the house went back to normal, so they could have dinner.

'What's on television, Mom?', Daniel asked.

'The Honeymooners', Margaret answered.

'I love Jackie Gleason. But is old', Daniel said.

'He is funny', Margaret stated.

'I prefer The Partridge Family. I like Susan Dey'.

They finished their meal, and watched the show together in the Dining Room.

Daniel yawned.

'Good night, Mom'.

'Good night, Daniel'.

He hugged her, and walked to the bathroom.

He turned the light on, and brushed his teeth.

Then he went to the toilet, washed his hands, and dried them on a grey towel. And turned the light off, and went to bed.

It was 10:30 PM.

There was a tapping on the window.

I turned the light on.

'Hurry up, Daniel', Rosemary Kincaid said.

He saw her.

'I invite you in', he said.

She smiled, and broke the barrier, before she glided into his bedroom.

Rosemary looked at the room.

'Your Mom is asleep'.

'Yes'.

'That is good. I need blood'.

'Blood'.

'Your blood'.

'Oh'.

'Are you afraid?', Rosemary asked him.

'No', Daniel answered.

'Liar'.

And she bared her sharp fangs, and bit his neck.

'Daniel'.

Silence.

'Daniel'.

More silence.

'Daniel, can you hear me?'.

'I...'.

She wiped away the blood with her small, right hand.

Daniel was dead.

'Daniel...'.

Margaret looked inside her son's bedroom.

She screamed, as she saw the vampire girl.

She backed away in horror, as she disappeared through the open window, and went into the cold woods.

Sheriff Wesley Johns smoked a cigarette.

'I'm sorry, Mrs. Byers. This town is not full of vampires. It's the bad atmosphere. I've been here since nineteen fifty', he said.

'He's dead because of her'.

'She was invited into his room'.

'Oh my God!'.

'Look, he'll be rising from the grave after three nights. He will be one of them'.

'I don't understand'.

'A vampire', the Sheriff said.

'But-'.

'We'll deal with the Kincaid family'.

'Why did she meet him?'.

'Fate', the Sheriff said.

'Fate'.

'Yes'.

Then the Coroner appeared, and Margaret cried.

The funeral was the following Tuesday morning at 8:00 AM.

Margaret didn't want to deal with the idea that Mississippi was a bad city. The Priest, Father Maguire, looked at the sky. The locals weren't smiling. 'This is the Devil's work; this is a tragedy. God will punish those who harm children. Amen!'.693Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡSgSCHsRVmy

'Amen!', the worshippers said.

And, as the hour long service ended, Margaret Byers left the following day.
