New York, 1973

Madeline Campbell focused on the book that was on the bed.

She was listening to Roberta Flack on the radio, as the distant strains of laughter in Central Park was heard.

'I hate the idea that there's anti-gay sentiment in America', Corinne Eichmann said. She smoked a cigarette, as she had a look at the paperback of 'Ruby Fruit Jungle', by Rita Mae Brown. The sun glowed in the New York sky, as locals went to Central Park to have breakfast.

'So, I was telling Tod about the Fischer account', Mark said.

'And'.

'And, he was happy. Besides, it was Saturday when he heard about the news of David's death on Independence Day, 1971'.

'That's two years' ago'.

'David was in Vietnam. When he came home, everyone treated him badly. He had psychological problems, and was in therapy'.

'God, that's bad'.

'Yeah, so where shall we go to after lunch?'.

'To Chad Hauser's house tonight', Mark said.

'Fine by me. What time?', Cale asked him.

Madeline yawned.

She looked at the window.

She had a shower, and was dressed.

Her face was youthful; her eyes focused on the voices in the kitchen. She watched the yellow bus was outside her house. 'I need to go Mom, Dad'. They nodded, as she grabbed her school bag, then she opened the front door, and went on the bus to go to school.

'Denise, where're you going, girl?', Mindy Kaplan asked her.

'I'm fine, Denise', she answered.

'Are you sure?', Mindy said.

'Yes!', Denise stated.

And she brought some cigarettes, and smoked them.

The man was at Central Park.

The flowers were bright, and colorful.

Tad Frank sat on the bench.

'Miss me?', John Gray asked.

'Yes', Tad answered.

He smiled, lit a cigarette, and they talked for the rest of the next hour.

Thelma Mandel gazed at the hippie girl.

'Cara'.

'Yes, do I know you?', she asked.

'We were at the Chicago in '69', Thelma answered.

She nodded.

'It was a year after President Nixon's win'.

'Yes, times are different', Cara said.

'I missed you'.

'I did too'.

'Where's your house?'.

'131st Street and 7th Avenue. It's the house near Central Park'.

'Show me after school'.

'Sure', Cara smiled.

Corinne saw Madeline.

'How are you?', she asked her.

'Good. Mom is afraid her daughter is a lesbian', Madeline answered.

'I'm a lesbian, too. Mom and Dad didn't want to know me after that. I lived in my house, but I was separated from them. I will leave home when I am seventeen', Corinne said.

'That is in three years' time'.

'Yes'.

And then they kissed.
