西元1877年，著名的美國發明家湯瑪士•愛迪生發明了留聲機。這是一種可以記錄並播放聲音的機械裝置。

據說，曾經有人謠傳留聲機之所以能記錄聲音是因為它囚禁了錄音者的靈魂，讓錄音者只能重複它被囚禁前說的最後一句話。所以有些人對於留聲機是避之唯恐不及。

然而稍微理智一點的人就會知道，留聲機不過是紀錄聲音的振動，並且用特殊裝置重新還原振動訊號而已。留聲機根本就和靈魂沒有半點關係。
