Two years' later...
'Mabel. It's time to go Christmas shopping', Mom said.
'Okay', Mabel said.
She was determined to have a good time. Her blue eyes flickered with hope. For a long time, the problems between her parents was due to the news that her mother hadn't had a promotion at the office; her Dad was waiting for the holiday bonus at his Lower Manhattan office two blocks' away.
'Can we see Santa Claus, Mom?'.
'Fine, Mabel', Mom answered.
And she smiled.
