The year is 2349. The location is the Rolanian sector, set where Washington DC once stood. Many years ago, the Great War occurred. The government realized the citizens were learning too much. Too much about the government, too much about sovereignty and freedom, and too much about strategy. And worst of all, information on the government's secret "projects" had leaked. The citizens were furious. They rioted against the government, attacking and killing almost every member. But the government fought back. They unleashed their "projects", completely relinquishing control. And the "projects" did their job well. They almost wiped out the entire population while the government watched, satisfied with their results. However, the "projects" grew too powerful, forcing the government to destroy them. The huge massacre was the perfect excuse for the government to rewrite the laws. They claimed that knowledge drove the rebellion, and therefore knowledge was dangerous. And so, a new law was passed. "Henceforth, all forms of printed, printable, and/or digital media is banned from every sector." The punishment for breaking the new law? Death. Newspapers and magazines have been outlawed. The Internet has been restricted, leaving the government's website as the only one left. And of course the daily news, the only available TV channel, is directly and heavily influenced by the government. But the most restricted would be the books. There are textbooks, however they're full of falsities. History books in particular have been filled with lies. They depict humans as violent, evil, and greedy, making the government look like heroes for protecting those that did not revolt. Of course, there is no mention of the "projects". Yes, life is greatly restricted. The freedom the rebels dreamed of has been completely crushed. Even the freedom of speech has been taken away. Anyone who speaks out against the government is taken away, never to be seen again. Even a sarcastic remark about hating the government is grounds for "the sentencing". The largest buildings (excluding government offices) are not schools, nor are they hospitals. They're orphanages, full of children whose parents have been "sentenced". By now, almost all of the anti-government and pro-book groups have been suppressed. But there is one group that has remained safe from the government's watchful eye. Under the code-name Telby, this store has stayed hidden. The employees? Normal people, risking their lives to bring knowledge and truth to others. This is the Last Bookstore.
