I was walking along the shore admiring the dark deep sea. Above it a golden and scarlet sky was reflecting in the water. I liked going there. The view was amazing, no matter what time you looked at it and the sand felt warm from the sun.857Please respect copyright.PENANAAzxTWgy28M
It was the perfect place to go when you needed time to think or be alone. The nearest road was about half a mile away and you couldn't reach the beach by car. The path through the forest was just too narrow, I had to come by bike.857Please respect copyright.PENANAvgI09oyGRZ
I reached an old lighthouse that had been out of use for as long as I could remember. In the dim light the setting sun provided I noticed a shadow standing on the top floor of the building. Whoever it was the person was climbing on the rail that edged along the open part of the lighthouse. At some point in the past the lighthouse keeper had gone along the railing to turn on the light so that ships could find their way home on dark nights without moonlight and stars to guide them. But the keeper would never climb on the railing.857Please respect copyright.PENANACDdGywq22j
I realized that the person was going to jump. I took off running until I reached the lighthouse and was standing right below the suicidal person. If he jumped now there was a big possibility that he would land on top of me and ultimately crush me.857Please respect copyright.PENANAjkeEWZe205
“Stop. What are you doing!” I yelled. The person now noticed me and, as if just realizing what was about to happen, he gripped the rails tightly to keep himself from falling.857Please respect copyright.PENANAB2XwKSgnlh
“Just stay where you are. I will be right up.” I shouted. I took a few quick steps towards the old and heavy wooden door but before my hand touched the handle I reverted my gaze upwards again. “Don't move.” I yelled to him, just to be sure that when I reached the top floor of the lighthouse it wouldn't already be too late.857Please respect copyright.PENANAUMmjic4WyZ
The spiral stone staircases were long and narrow. I felt as if I would never reach the top but finally, after a lot of short breaths from the taxing physical exercise, I finally saw light again. The sun had set and the stars shined brilliantly.857Please respect copyright.PENANAz2tm7GWMwO
Shadows danced on the face of a young man. He looked the same age as me, about seventeen. His chocolate brown eyes betrayed sadness and panic. His dark hair was a bit long and matted. I am ashamed that I thought of a thing like this the situation we were in but he was good looking. I imagined what he would look like if he was smiling. 857Please respect copyright.PENANAwOcwFr1vyO
“It's dangerous. Come on this side of the railing and tell me what's the matter.” 857Please respect copyright.PENANAbRMKaIBCfY
The boy shook his head and tears that he had been holding back streamed down his cheeks. For a second there I though he was going to jump. 857Please respect copyright.PENANAGPSJTInfQT
I approached him cautiously, took his arm in mine and helped him back to safety. As soon as I had done that he collapsed on the floor, his sobs louder than before.857Please respect copyright.PENANAXfZsJeOW0r
We sat there, on the cold stone floor, his head on my shoulder and my arms around his shaking body, until he calmed and the cries subsided.857Please respect copyright.PENANAoUaFojmuDj
Afterwards, we went our separate ways. I asked if he had a mode of transportation to get to the nearest bus stop and he nodded; barely, but it was still a nod. I went to get my bike and when I got back to the beach he was gone. Just to be safe, I checked the lighthouse again. He wasn't there.857Please respect copyright.PENANANHg7ZnPB71
That was how the last sunny day of my summer holiday drew to a close. The last week before school was all rainy and stormy. I stayed happily inside and thought of the boy I had met that night on the beach. Would he have jumped if I hadn't come? I wondered if we would ever see each other again? What I obviously didn't know at the time was that my question was soon to be answered, whether I wanted it answered or not. 857Please respect copyright.PENANA0F6mzTlREx
