"Agent Striker, think this through. Don't let your emotions get in the way of what could happen," He tried to tell her, hoping to calm her down.
"Come on, we haven't got all day," A man spoke with urgency, his gun pointed at Agent Striker.
General McLean looked at the man, a look of despair in his eyes. He almost wished that things had never come down to this. He never thought that his Agent and himself would get themselves in such grave danger. If her life hadn't been put on the line in the first place, none of this would have ever happened.
He did his best to protect her when action called for it. But somehow, it had become out of his control. The two of them were faced with a grave decision. If he didn't do as the criminal said, she would be killed. But if he walked away forever, she would live, but only with very severe consequences. He had to make a choice.
"I would rather die than to see you walk out of my life. I refuse to be void of emotions and turned in to a weapon," Agent Striker spoke with defiance; though her voice trembled.
She refused to be alone. She had dealt with the feelings once before but ever since being taken under General McLeans' wing, Agent Striker felt home again and was happy to be with someone who cared about her. He was like the father that she never had. He needed to protect her; keep her abilities secret from the criminals, for fear of something like this. He saw her potential for greatness, but also for destruction. Ever since he walked in to her life at such a young age, General McLean had basically raised her to become who she was now. If he left, she wouldn't know what to do with herself.
The criminal shrugged.
"Alright, if that's what you want," He said.
He readied his gun to take aim and General McLean stepped in between Agent Striker and the criminal, just as the gun went off. Agent Striker flinched and her eyes went wide with terror. She watched as the man in front of her went tumbling to the ground, blood pouring out of his chest.
She snapped. The dangerous side of her came out. The man who shot General McLean was taken down before he even had a chance to overpower her. She killed him with her bare hands. She ran over to General McLean, who was barely still alive. She gathered him in her arms.
"Robert.." She weakly spoke.
"Elizabeth...I'm sorry. You've got to survive on your own from now on," He told her, his voice trembling.
She shook her head. She refused to believe it.
"I'll call for help. You'll be fine. You silly old man, you've gone through worse," Elizabeth replied, trying to be hopeful.
But the amount of blood...there was no way he would live.
"You shouldn't have done that! You should have just walked away!" She yelled, suddenly angry with him.
"That was a choice that I wasn't willing to make. I'd...I'd rather give my life for you."
He wasn't able to hold on much longer. She held him tighter in her arms and kissed the top of his head.
"Hey...remember that time when you were graduating High School?" Robert asked weakly.
She smiled faintly at the memory.
"Do you remember what I said?"
She shook her head.
"I said that....one day...I won't be around...and that you would...have to stand on your own two feet. Do me a favor?"
"What?" She asked.
Robert McLean took a sharp breath before he weakly replied.
"Be brave for me."
And with that, he took his last breath. Elizabeth took a sharp intake of breath herself and felt tears stream down her face; harder than ever before in her life. She held his lifeless body in her arms for what seemed like a lifetime as she went over in her mind the many times that she depended on him for the little things.
He was her emotional support and reasoning. Before him, Elizabeth was ruthless, tortured and wounded. Her moral compass pointed straight towards hell. But when he arrived, he brought out a side that she didn't know that she had. He reminded her constantly that being kind to others would get her further in life, even as an Agent. He helped her find a balance. Now suddenly finding herself in a moment of loneliness, Agent Elizabeth Striker felt unbalanced. She wasn't sure that she could be brave for him.
Wiping her tears, Elizabeth took a deep breath and composed herself. No, she wouldn't be like this for long. She could mourn later, after work was done.
