It’s been seventeen long years living in Dunsville California. Having a steady population of 3,376 people Dunsville is by far the most boring town known to man. It's the kind of town where you can't get beers on Sundays because of the church, and everyone knows everything about everybody, and the only thing that makes this town remotely interesting is the benefit of being able to legally smoke pot once you turn 18, nice right? Anyways, my name is Harlan. We moved to Dunsville when I was two after my mother passed away from a car accident one night it was raining. Myka was only 6 months old at the time but my father and I were never the same. My dad was already “not the same” after coming back from Afghanistan so not a lot changed. I’m not sure what they did to him out there but he came back completely insane. The doctor says it’s PTSD, I didn’t know what that was as a kid so seeing my father drunk and violent every day was pretty confusing for me but growing up I see why my mom was always so upset. After she passed it didn’t get any better. Years pass and most mornings he’s waking up with a bottle of the closest booze in hand, no cup needed. Throwing nasty slurs every chance he got and sometimes if he got good and drunk actual punches. Once my sister became old enough to spend the night at other people’s houses she stopped coming home as much but me being an introvert and not having many friends I stuck around until I found my girlfriend Kyler when I was sixteen.
Kyler is what some would call a problem child. She left her mother’s house when she was 13 because her mom’s brother was molesting her. After she conjured up the confidence to tell her mother what was happening, she was completely devastated when her mother ended up calling her a liar. Not knowing how to drive she stole her mom’s car and ran away resulting in her not finishing school and having to become an adult far before her time. Luckily her mom never filed a stolen car report so she could at least live in the car. She’s kinda rough around the edges but once you get to know her you know she's nothing but 5’5, 132lbs of pure love and endless loyalty to those she cares for. When I met Kyler she was three cups into a cup pong game with one of her friends at a party both of us were far too young to be at. The only reason I was there was because of my friend Brenden, he asked me to come along and claimed that I need to and I quote “find better things to do other than smoke pot by the railroad tracks”. If you ask me that’s a load, but I agreed anyway and I’m glad I did. Once we arrived at the party he leads me towards a face I would soon know to be Kyler and introduces us. We exchange slight hello’s later to be forced to be on the same cup pong team, after a few games and a joint or two it felt like we had known each other forever. We exchanged numbers and we’ve been going strong three years and counting. Because my father has decided to miraculously disappear the past two years with no word I’ve had the ability to give Kyler a place to shower and sleep until we figure something else out. My house isn’t much but it’s better than a 2005 Toyota Camry and I think she’d agree with that.
Ever since my father has basically moved out and left me to find a way to pay for all the bills my sister started coming home more often and helping out. Even after everything, she managed to stay in school, and actually be in the top 10% of her class. Considering I never even asked where she would go when she left I figured she could have been up to anything I know I would have been. Dad was too drunk to care and who was I to stop her from running away from this terror so she had nothing but opportunity to mess up and she kept a straight head, I’m proud of her, and now that she’s started coming back around we started becoming close again. We don’t talk much about what happened over the years but we share everything else, like what gossip is flowing through school and I have recently learned how incredibly talented she is. Get this, I walked into the house one day to this girl playing the guitar and singing to an instrumental of some R&B song I didn’t recognize. Talk about a two for one special. Her singing is angelic and the way she strums that guitar can put a baby to sleep. I guess having our father out of the picture allowed us to be happy, or at least try but out of the fear of jinxing it, we’ll leave it at that.
