Over the next few weeks, Jared, your dad, and Jensen gradually moved all your stuff into Jensen’s house. Your mother made her peace with Jensen, just as you’d expected. She apologized for attacking him and they hugged it out. Now Jensen was her new favorite person, especially with how well he’d been taking care of you.
Days that weren’t spent moving were spent together trying to make every moment count. You’d been to several doctor’s appointments together, each one giving you great news every single time. You were making great progress, some would say better than expected. Most of your time was spent together either working on Jensen’s brewery, watching the sunset on the boat, dinner with Emma, her boy of the week, Jared, and Gen, or cuddling in bed or on the couch together. It didn’t really matter to you what you were doing as long as you were spending time together.
Now that shooting had resumed and Jensen was gone so much, the days felt like they were going on forever. Since you were healing and able now, you’d taken back manager duties from home to give you something to do. Begrudgingly, Jensen gave you the added task of doing paperwork for the brewery to keep you busy. You’d offered several times. He had refused. You begged. Jared came to bat for you, saying it was only logical, considering you’d be the one doing the purchasing of the beer for San Jac anyway, so you might as well just do all the paperwork. Bless Jared Padalecki and his logic for saving your sanity.
“Aunt Y/N.” A little voice whispered and tiny hands shook your knee. “Aunt Y/N. Wake up! Your back is gonna hurt!” Shep shook your knee again and you groaned, squinting your eyes tightly shut before trying to open them.
“Hmm?” You opened your bleary eyes in complete confusion as to where you even were and why someone was calling you Aunt Y/N. “Where…?”
“I think you fell asleep over that boring paperwork.” Gen giggled. “We rang the bell but you didn’t answer so we used our key. I hope that’s OK.”
“Yeah…yeah of course. We had a lunch date.” You moved to sit up, the stiffness already settling into your back muscles. A piece of paper was stuck to your face and Tom giggled, reaching up to pull it off for you. “Thanks, dude.”
“Welcome!” He smiled and laid the paper gently back on your stack of papers. He and Shep both opened their arms wide, hesitating at first. They’d been hesitant since the first time they saw you after the surgery and tried to tackle hug you. Everyone yelled all at once and scared them a bit. Since then, they’d waited for you to come to them.
“Gimme the tackle hug.” You smirked. “I’m not gonna break. I swear.” Both of them were on you in an instant, squeezing as tight as their tiny arms could muster. “There we go. Much better. So…you two up for some junk food?”
“What are you feeding my kids?” Gen sighed in fake exasperation. “And yourself? You know you’re supposed to be eating heart healthy.”
“Chicken is very heart healthy, thank you very much.” You sassed, as you made your way into the kitchen, reaching out and stealing Odette from her. Odette gurgled and cooed as you took her, giving you a gummy smile. “Hello!” You grinned.
“Yeah.” Gen rolled her eyes, stopping at your kitchen island. “When it’s not covered in 10 tons of honey barbeque sauce like this chicken seems to be.”
“There’s salad right there.” You pointed to the bowl as you put Odette in her chair. “So it balances out.” Gen laughed under her breath while the two of you dished out food for the kids first then yourselves. Once the kids were settled in and stuffing their faces, Gen turned to you and you could just tell by the look on her face something was on her mind.
“So, how are you handling everything with J being away?” Gen asked. “I know it’s a lot. Especially with you being a few weeks out from a major surgery.” She wasn’t entirely wrong. It was a lot. He’d been gone for 2 weeks and you hadn’t been able to see him. His schedule for the beginning of the year was absolutely insane with the beginning of the season, a convention in Chicago, more filming in Vancouver, San Diego Comic Con, then right back to filming in Vancouver. You probably wouldn’t see him for at least another week. You’d talked and face-timed every day but it wasn’t at all the same as having him with you.
“Honestly? It’s been kinda rough but I mean, like I told him, I knew what I signed up for.” You answered Gen honestly and matter-of-factly. “I even asked for all the extra work, to keep me busy while he’s gone and he’s not gonna be gone forever. What’s really gonna suck is when you fly out to San Diego tomorrow and I’m gonna still be stuck here.” You’d asked your doctor at your appointment the day before if you were cleared to fly yet. Still no dice on that one. If you had been cleared, you would’ve been on the plane to San Diego with Gen and the kids, no questions asked.
“I really thought you would’ve been cleared.” Gen pouted. “It would’ve been a lot of fun to have you in San Diego.”
“Maybe.” You chewed your lower lip in anticipation of your confession. “I’m still not sure how I feel about interacting in person with Jensen’s fans. Like the comments on social media are all mostly really sweet and the people in Rome were great but I just feel like people are gonna hate me for taking him off the market.” You spun your cup of disgusting decaf coffee on the table and Gen let out a soft sigh, reaching her hand across the table and grabbing one of yours.
“You were so ready to sing in Phoenix though!” Gen said. “What changed?”
“I don’t know.” You shrugged. “Sometimes I just get insecure.”
“I can’t say I know how scary this is for you, but I can say for the most part, the fans are really supportive.” Gen smiled. “I read some comments after Rome. People seemed to really adore you. People are supporting you now through this whole health scare. They miss you on Instagram. Plus, you make Jensen happy. Why don’t you start small?”
“What do you mean?”
“Put yourself back out there…” Gen reasoned. “Start posting again.”
“You mean like…your blog?” You quirked your eyebrow in confusion. “I don’t have anything to offer that they want, Gen, I’m not famous.”
“Not like that.” Gen shook her head. “Just you know, pictures of you and Jensen together sometimes, or even just you. Let them know you know they exist and that you care because I know that you do.”
Nodding your head you pulled your phone from your pocket and scrolled through some of your pictures, finding one to post. It didn’t include Jensen, it was just one you’d taken after you’d gotten most of your bandages off. “Here goes nothing.” You quickly typed out a small caption and posted to your Instagram, spinning the phone around for Gen to read.
“It’s perfect.” She smiled. “And Jensen must be right next to his phone. He already liked it. He must’ve shared it too. A ton of people already liked it.”
“Whoa.” You stared at your screen, slightly awestruck for a second. “That was fast.” You started to scroll through as the comments came pouring in. The very first was, of course, from Jensen. He told you that he missed you and he’d be home soon. The rest were from Supernatural fans, wishing you well and sending you love. Some had even asked if you had any plans to sing at any upcoming conventions.
“See?” Gen chuckled, picking Odette up from her seat as she started to fuss. “You’re gonna do just fine.”
The following morning, Gen was gone, Emma was working, your parents were on their way back home, and you were alone. You’d finished most of the work you’d needed to finish for the week and you were bored out of your mind, scrolling through your iPad on the couch when Jensen’s face popped up on Facetime. You answered perhaps a little too eagerly, and laughed when you finally got a good look at him, all bedhead and bleary eyes. “Hey there, tiger. Did you just wake up?” You chuckled.
“Am I that obvious?”
“Yeah.” You giggled. “But it’s cute. You could’ve actually gotten out of bed and had coffee before you called. You’re not exactly human without coffee.”
“You should talk.” Jensen sassed. “Hey, how are you functioning anyway? You can’t even have coffee. What’s in that coffee cup?”
“Decaf, dad.” You sighed in exasperation. “And it sucks. Don’t remind me. So…what’s on the agenda for today? Conan’s today, right? And Jared’s birthday?”
“Yeah.” Jensen smiled. “That’s pretty much it. Just Conan today. Speaking of Jared’s birthday, did you get his birthday surprise shipped out ok? No problems?” Jensen had asked you a few days before to get the very first keg from the brewery sent to the set of Conan for Jared’s birthday if you could manage it. You didn’t disappoint. You were able to coordinate it with the staff so that everything would go according to plan.
“Should be arriving right on schedule. Tell Jared Happy Birthday from me when you see him?”
“Will do.” Jensen nodded. “So how are you?” You couldn’t help but laugh. You’d talked to him last night before you went to sleep and you were fine then, there was no reason you wouldn’t be fine now. “I know. I’m sorry. It’s just that I’m not home to really know that you’re fine and I know you like to say you’re fine when you aren’t. That’s all. You look great though.”
“Ackles!” You could hear banging coming from somewhere in Jensen’s hotel and huffed a laugh. “Jackles!” Jared. Definitely Jared.
“Shut up!” Jensen yelled back.
“Uh…maybe you should get that?” You raised an eyebrow, smirking a little. “I don’t think he’s going away anytime soon.” Jensen groaned and rolled out of bed, trudging to the door and swinging it open, finding a very amused Jared standing in the doorway.
“Did you forget we were going to get breakfast before we picked up Gen?” Jared asked.
“Yeah, sorry.” Jensen chuckled. “I was talking to –“
“Happy Birthday!” You yelled.
“Oh hey!” Jared stole Jensen’s phone and turned it to face him, waving at you like a crazy person. “Thanks gorgeous! You look great! Feel great?”
“I’m still kinda tired all the time, but mostly I’m bored.” You whined pathetically. “I wanna be where the cool people are not stuck in Austin!”
“I’m sorry.” Jensen sighed. “I’m not supposed to tell you this but I think it’ll help. Emma sent me a text. She said she has a surprise for you either tonight or tomorrow sometime.”
“He knows what it is. We both do.” Of course Jared had to throw it in your face in typical Jared fashion. Jensen elbowed him in the ribs, glaring at him to shut up before he spilled the surprise.
“You are both awful. A surprise could quite possibly give me a heart attack, ya know.” You shrugged. “Not that either of you care.”
“Wow.” Jensen stared at you in complete disbelief. “That’s…that’s really dramatic, honey. I think you’ll be fine.” Jared laughed in the background and checked his watch then glanced up at Jensen apologetically. “I think he’s telling me we gotta get going. I should get dressed. I’ll call you tonight, ok? I love you!”
“I love you too!” Both men blew you a kiss as Jensen ended the call and you sighed, leaning back into the couch wondering what possible surprise Emma could have planned. With Emma it could be literally anything, but she hadn’t dropped so much as a hint to you.
Emma showed up that night after work, right before Conan O’Brien was set to air. The two of you had made plans to watch it together, even though you had seen the photos and talked to Jensen you’d remained relatively spoiler free. You knew about Jared’s keg stand but other than that you didn’t know much.
The two of you sat on the couch together with snacks and drinks, watching the show together. You didn’t realize you had a stupid smile on your face until Emma pointed it out. “You’re really cute watching him.” Emma giggled. “Like a schoolgirl.”
“Shut the fuck up.” You snapped. “I just miss him. That’s all. Plus, he looks really happy. They both do.”
“Jensen, I would be remiss if I didn’t ask how Y/N is feeling.” Conan asked and you perked up at the mention of your name, really not expecting it at all. “You posted a hospital picture a few weeks back and she posted a picture on Instagram yesterday thanking people for the well wishes.”
“Yes.” Jensen nodded. “For the people who don’t know, Y/N is my girlfriend. Some of the fans have met her. She had open heart surgery a few weeks back to replace a heart valve and she is doing amazingly well. She really wanted to be here but her doctor said no, so sadly she is not in San Diego with me this year. Hopefully next Comic Con she will be.” Jensen waved and blew you a kiss. “I Love you, Y/N/N.”
“Aw!” Emma slapped your arm. “He loves you! He proclaimed it on national TV!”
“I know.” You could feel the heat in your cheeks. It was stupid, really. You knew he loved you but for him to say it to that amount of people at one time meant something more somehow. You spent the rest of the interview with the same smile on your face, even through Jared’s keg stand when your name was brought up again for having the keg shipped on such short notice.
Emma shook your arm when the show was over and she realized you hadn’t really said much, lost in your own thoughts. “Hey.” She said. “What’s wrong? He loves you!”
“Nothing’s wrong.” You smiled back at her, laughing softly. “It’s just that…every guy I’ve ever dated has been a dick. It’s like I don’t know how to react to someone who isn’t a dick. I don’t think any guy has ever just said ‘I love you’ without any expectations like that, and definitely not to millions of people.”
“I’m so happy for you.” Emma gushed and pulled you into a hug. “You’re so sappy about it and it’s adorable.” You were about to tell her to shut up again when someone started ringing your doorbell. You had no idea who it could be. Pretty much everyone who it could possibly be was gone and it was so late anyway, they wouldn’t be coming over. “You should get that.” Emma said and pulled away, smirking knowingly.
“Who is it?”
“It’s a surprise.” She shrugged.
“Ok…” You got up off the couch and she followed close behind as you made your way to the door, flinging it open and coming face to face with a man you hadn’t seen in years.
“Hi Pipsqueak.” Your reaction was instant, as you jumped up, disregarding your still healing scar, throwing yourself into his arms knowing he would catch you. He’d never let you fall.
“Gavin!” You screamed and buried your face in his neck. “What are you doing here?”
Gavin Bailey was Emma’s older brother and by default, yours. When you’d told Jared you always wanted a brother, you hadn’t been lying. You did always want a brother and Gavin was the reason why. He protected you from everyone who had ever tried to bully you your entire life. He beat up every kid who ever picked on you. He chased away the men who treated you like shit. Gavin was the closest thing you had to a brother, until he joined the Marines and got deployed more than once.
“I’m home. For good.” He smiled and squeezed you tight, lowering you to your feet. “No more fighting in Afghanistan. No more living in Germany on base. I’m back for good.”
“Surprise.” Emma yelled from behind you. Gavin walked into the house, his arm around your shoulder, taking in his surroundings.
“Wow.” He let out a breath. “Nice place.”
“Yeah.” You huffed a laugh. “It’s Jensen’s, really…I just got all my stuff moved in. I’m gonna rent or sell my place.”
“Right, Jensen, the new actor boyfriend.” Gavin nodded and sat you down with him on your couch. “He here? I wanna meet him.” Emma took a seat on your other side, staring at her brother. He’d already slipped right back into overprotective brother mode and it hadn’t been five minutes.
“No, Gavin.” Emma sighed. “He’s in San Diego. We talked about this.”
“Right, he just left her here alone after major surgery, which I’m sorry I couldn’t get here for by the way.” Gavin grabbed your hand and squeezed tight. “I’m so sorry, Pipsqueak.”
“Alright, one, he didn’t leave me alone. I’m a big girl I can fend for myself.” You glared at Gavin hard, letting him know you meant what you were saying. “And two, it’s not like you could’ve been here when you were stationed overseas. So I forgive you. And three, Jensen isn’t like the other guys.”
“He’s not.” Emma agreed. You didn’t realize you had a tear sliding your cheek until Gavin reached out to wipe it away.
“Why are you cryin’?” Gavin questioned, pulling you into his chest. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I just…I don’t know.” You stuttered, rambling, trying to explain to him what you were feeling, but you couldn’t. Luckily, Emma knew. Emma always knew.
“She’s a glass case of emotion right now.” Emma sighed. “She’s been like this since the surgery but Jensen just like…declared his love for her on national TV and she hasn’t seen him in something like 2 weeks and she misses him. She couldn’t fly out to San Diego. The doctor said no. And she won’t see him for another week. I think she’s going stir crazy.”
“And now you’re here. And he knew you were coming and he knew it’d make me really happy and I am, but I wish he was here. You should meet him.” You rambled, pulling yourself back together.
“So you can’t fly?” Gavin questioned. You shook your head and wiped your eyes. “San Diego is only about a day’s drive away…go pack a bag. We’re going to San Diego.”
“What?” You scoffed. “You just got home you don’t wanna drive to San Diego.”
“Yeah, I do. Plus, Emma’s off work until Wednesday. She took the time off knowing I was coming home. We can make a weekend out of it. Always wanted to hit up Comic Con. Pack your shit.”
“We’re gonna have to stop a few times for her.” Emma said. “We can’t let her sit that long. She’s a blood clot risk.”
“Anything we gotta do to keep her healthy, we’ll do. But they said she couldn’t fly. They didn’t say she couldn’t roadtrip. We’re leaving as soon as you’re both ready, so come on. Ready, set go!” Gavin clapped his hands and barked orders at you both with a mischievous gleam in his eyes. One he should’ve lost on the battlefield and hadn’t. He hadn’t changed at all. Gavin’s smile was just as bright as you remembered and this was why he was your favorite person for most of your life other than Emma.
“You’re the best.” You squealed and wrapped your arms around his neck before running as quick as you could up to your room to get your things and make arrangements for the dogs before taking off for San Diego.
As soon as you reached the top of the stairs you clutched your chest, gasping for air. You’d definitely run up the stairs way too fast for your current level of fitness. You stood there for several minutes, reminding yourself how to breathe until the moment passed and you were breathing regularly again. “What the fuck.” You flattened your hand over your heart, feeling it beat under your palm. It wasn’t erratic or out of sync. It didn’t feel like it was beating out of your chest. There was no chest pain. “You’re fine, Y/N.” You told yourself. “You just ran up the stairs way too fast. That’s all.”
You made your way to your room and pulled your luggage from the closet, opening it and tossing clothes inside. “Need some help in here?” Gavin asked, appearing in your doorway with Emma. Emma looked at you hesitantly, furrowing her eyebrows and you gave them both a half smile, shaking your head.
“I’m good. Just moving a little slower than usual. That’s all.” You shrugged them off, packing the last of your clothes and zipping the suitcase. Gavin took it from you immediately, while you grabbed the rest of your things.
“I’ll carry your stuff.” He said. “Wouldn’t want you to break on me my first day back. The new boyfriend might kill me.” Emma grabbed some of your other bags and both of them started to carry your things downstairs while you grabbed a few smaller items and shoved them into a small bag.
“Yeah.” You giggled. “Wouldn’t want that.” In that moment you decided you wouldn’t tell them what happened on the stairs. Nobody needed to know you got so excited you overexerted yourself. “No big deal anyway.” You shrugged to yourself.
