“Can I have access to my girlfriend sometime this week?” Jensen glared at Emma who hadn’t stopped cuddling you since you let her in the room. You were going home today and she still refused to leave your side, taking up half your bed and clinging to you like glue.
“No.” She answered, burying her face in your neck. “She’s mine now. You had your turn.” You held your hand up to your face and laughed, cringing a little at the pain it caused. You didn’t see him snap the photo of you in that moment, but he couldn’t help himself. Seeing you laughing again made him happy.
“You know you could both cuddle me. You could take the other side, Jens.”
“Is that what you want?” He asked.
You pouted and nodded your head, patting your empty side. “This side is lonely.”
“You’re really gonna milk this for all its worth aren’t you?” Jensen moved to your other side, dropping the bed rail and squishing you between him and Emma, cuddling close.
“It’s my heart!” You gasped dramatically. “I could have died!” Emma and Jensen both rolled their eyes at your sudden flair for the dramatic and leaned their foreheads against your head. You giggled when Jensen’s scruff tickled your cheek and turned your head to kiss his nose.
“How are you feelin’?” He asked. “Really? No more jokes.”
“Sore.” You sighed, resting your head against his. “If I move my arms it hurts. If I breathe it hurts. If I try to lay on my side it hurts. I couldn’t even put my clothes on to go home without your help, Jens. I’m useless.” Putting your shirt on had been the struggle of the century. Lifting your arms above your head had proven to be an almost insurmountable task.
“You’re not useless, Y/N/N.” Jensen smiled softly. “They just cut your chest open a few days ago. You can’t expect to be back to 100% in a week.”
I wish they would’ve kept giving me IV stuff instead of pills.”
“I thought they were pretty kickass though. They put you to sleep.” Emma giggled. “You were knocked out yesterday when I came in.”
“I gave her a back massage.” Jensen said, sounding ridiculously proud of himself. “Knocked her out in less than 3 minutes.”
“Ego, Jensen.” Emma warned.
“He’s right, though.” You smirked. “Can you do that again when we get home?” You asked, giving him your best puppy dog eyes. “It was the best non-drug-induced sleep I’ve had since I’ve been here.”
“Yeah, for you, anything.” Jensen smiled and kissed your cheek. “Where the hell are these people with your discharge papers anyway? That’s really all we’re waiting for then you’re free.”
“I’ll go see what the holdup is.” Emma crawled out of your bed and headed out the door, leaving you and Jensen alone for the first time that day.
“Finally!” Jensen threw his head back on your pillow and you smiled back at him, shaking your head. “I thought she’d never leave.”
“I think we have about 2 minutes of freedom from our keeper.” You giggled and leaned forward, kissing his cheek.
“So, you’re going home.” Jensen smirked, kissing your forehead. “Got any exciting plans?”
“Sleeping in our nice, fluffy bed.” You said. “Dangling my legs in the pool since I can’t swim yet. Maybe a boat ride?”
“Yeah?” Jensen asked. “You feel up to that?”
“It’s not strenuous.” You chuckled. “You and me alone on the boat at sunset…sounds kinda heavenly, right?” He pursed his lips and hummed in response, nodding his head.
“You’re free!” Emma came running into your room, waving papers in the air with Sidney, one of your regular nurses, following happily behind her.
“Sorry we took so long, sweetie.” Sidney smiled. “You ready to go home?” She started to remove your IV lines and you couldn’t wait to get out of the damn bed and on your way home. The hospital was starting to drive you crazy.
You practically latched onto Jensen as he helped you from the bed, grimacing with pain whenever you got jostled around.
“I’m OK.” You reassured Jensen when he looked at your face, checking to make sure you were truly fine. Emma made her way over to help as well as Sidney, making sure you weren’t going to fall. It was overkill if you were being honest, but also comforting at the same time.
Once you were in the SUV, you couldn’t help but notice the new padding Jensen had added to the seat belt. “You really think of everything don’t you?” You chuckled, glancing down at the furry padding on the seat belt. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Jensen smirked that signature smirk of his that made you weak in your knees and you huffed a laugh, looking away from him. “Em’s gonna follow us home and make sure you have everything you need. I want her to make sure I didn’t forget anything.”
“I’m sure you didn’t. Even if you did…we have stores here.” You shrugged. “I’d be fine alone for a few minutes. I’m not made of glass.”
“Not riskin’ it.” Jensen grabbed your hand and gently pulled it to his lips, kissing the knuckles. “You’re stubborn. You’d get up and fall or something.”
“Shut up.”
When Jensen pulled into the driveway you started to get out of the SUV yourself, but he was right there, opening your door and scooping you into his arms. “I can walk, ya know. Actually, I’m supposed to.”
“I can spoil you for one night. Nobody has to know.”
“I’ll know.” Emma shook her head, watching the two of you interact from the porch where she had been waiting not so patiently for the two of you. “You’re gonna have to let her fend for herself a little bit, Ackles.” Emma laughed and opened the door for Jensen, making sure it didn’t hit you. “Seriously, you don’t want her to get blood clots or something. And by the way, you drive really slow.”
“Precious cargo.” Jensen shot back.
Emma rolled her eyes and made her way inside and up the stairs, carrying your bag of supplies. Jensen followed closely behind her, holding you tight to him, careful not to jostle you. “I’ll carry you upstairs then I’ll put you down.” Jensen relented.
Jensen placed you on your feet at the top of the staircase, his arm still wrapped around your middle. You bit your lip in an effort to bite back the pain and made your way to the bedroom, following behind Emma.
Jensen helped you crawl into the large bed, propping you up with as many pillows as he could while Emma laid your medications and anything else you could possibly need on the table within arm’s reach. “I think you have everything.” Emma said, looking over everything she’d laid out for the third time. “If you need anything though, you have my number.”
“Thanks, Emz.” You smiled weakly, completely and utterly exhausted, the entire week catching up with you now that you were back home in your own bed.
“Get some rest.” She leaned down to give you a gentle hug, pausing and holding you for several seconds. “I’m glad you’re ok. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“Steal my boyfriend.” You murmured, making her laugh and lightly slap your shoulder.
“You’re such a bitch. I love you.” Emma giggled and turned to hug Jensen. “Take care of her. Good luck.”
As soon as Emma was gone, Jensen turned and started to strip from his jeans and t-shirt down to just his boxers. “Putting on a show for me?” You asked, watching with a dopey smile on your face. “Careful, J. Not really sure my heart can handle that.” You could barely keep your eyes open as you spoke and Jensen looked just as exhausted as you did, purely from spending the last week in the hospital by your side. Now that you thought about it, he’d probably gotten close to no sleep the entire week.
“Cute.” Jensen slid into his side of the bed, positioning his body protectively around yours. “You’re exhausted.”
“So are you.” You sighed and turned toward him, playing connect the dots with the freckles on his chest. “You didn’t sleep much, huh?”
“No.” Jensen shook his head, moving his hand up to your face, running his finger lightly over your brow bone at first then applying just the right amount of pressure. You sighed, fluttering your eyes shut in contentment. “Spent most of the time keeping an eye on you.” You smiled and pulled him in for a gentle kiss, your eyes fluttering shut as your lips connected with his. “Hey, have you talked to your mom since she came to visit?”
“You mean since she accused me of letting you control me and saying I had no right to deny my own mother entry to my hospital room even though I’m an adult?” You questioned. “No, I talked to my dad this morning. He said she’s still pissed.”
“I’m sorry, Y/N/N.”
“S’not your fault she can be crazy overbearing.” You mumbled and cuddled into his chest. “She’ll get over it and act like it never even happened in a couple days anyway. You’ll be the best guy ever and blah blah blah…” Jensen huffed a laugh and ran his hand through your hair; placing a kiss on your forehead, content to just lie there quietly together.
You weren’t entirely sure how or when you fell asleep, but now you were wide awake and writhing in pain, feeling like your chest had been torn apart all over again. You were trying hard to be quiet and find a comfortable position to get back to sleep, not wanting to wake Jensen. He looked so peaceful, like it was the first real night of sleep he’d had in a week.
You made one wrong move, trying to shift yourself to a more upright position and let out a cry that alerted him to your discomfort. “Babe?” He yawned and inhaled a deep breath through his nose, rubbing his eyes with the back of his hands. “What hurts?”
“Everything.” You sobbed pathetically, fat tears rolling down your cheeks. “I feel like my chest is tearing apart, Jens.”
“Do I need to call someone? Do we need to go back to the hospital?”
“No.” You shook your head. “No. I don’t think so. I just…I don’t know. I can’t make it stop. I’ll go to the guest room. It’s ok. You need to sleep.” You started to move yourself out of the bed and Jensen gently grabbed your wrist, pulling you back.
“You’re not going anywhere. C’mere.” Jensen sat up and positioned himself against the headboard. He eased you gently over between his legs, resting your back against his chest. He grabbed the pillow they’d given you to hold against your chest when you coughed or moved around and rested it against your chest, moving your arm up to hold it in place. “Hold that as tight as you can.”
“K.” You sniffled and relaxed against Jensen’s chest letting the warmth of his body seep into your back muscles. His hands moved up to your neck, his fingers digging into the muscles there, working out the knots. His hands moved down, applying pressure to your shoulder blades and your back, kneading at the muscles. Your focus went to him instead of the pain in your chest and you let out a breath, relaxing back into him.
“There ya go. Feel better?” Jensen trailed kissed from your shoulder to your neck and right behind your ear, a spot that always made you shiver.
“Mmhmm. Still hurts but this is better. Thank you.”
“Tomorrow, if you feel up to it, I was thinkin’ we could take that boat ride.” Jensen kept his voice low and steady, right next to your ear. His hands were still massaging your muscles as he spoke. “I’ll even bring my guitar. We can sit out in the middle of nowhere and just play.”
“Sounds good.” You murmured, letting out a sigh and turning to face Jensen, resting your forehead against his cheek. The pain in your chest had dulled to manageable levels and Jensen’s back massage was about to melt you into a puddle. He was way too good to you. Way more than you deserved. “J?”
“Hmm?”
“Thanks for taking care of me.” Jensen didn’t say a word; instead he nuzzled against your neck, giving you more tiny kisses until sleep reclaimed you both.
True to his word, Jensen took you out on the boat the next day. He waited until sunset, not wanting you to overheat in the midday sun. “It’s beautiful.” You stared out at the water, the pinks and blues of the sky a perfect contrast. “Can I?” You gestured to Jensen’s guitar that was leaning against a seat and he raised an eyebrow, having never heard you play before.
“Go for it.” He smirked as you picked up the guitar and positioned it in your lap, strumming a few random chords. The first song that came to your head happened to be Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran. You’d sung it a few times at your old job. As soon as Jensen recognized the song you were playing he started to sing it to you, soft and sweet. You looked up from your hands and were met with his emerald eyes staring back at you, looking at you with more love than anyone you’d ever been with. “You really can play.”
“You doubted me?” Jensen grinned and shook his head, taking the guitar from you and putting it aside, leaning in for a tender kiss. When he pulled away he looked distant, like something was bothering him. “What’s wrong?”
“I just - I was thinking this morning…I have to go back to Vancouver soon to film.” Jensen sighed. I have San Diego Comic Con and a couple other cons right too. I’m not gonna be here with you to help you if you need it or go to your doctor’s appointments. You’re gonna be all alone.”
“No I won’t.” You smiled softly and cupped his face. “And it’s ok. I knew when we started this relationship that you had to travel. But I’ll have Emma and Gen. My parents are around for a bit too. And I’m healing fine.”
“Yeah, but I should be here.” Jensen looked utterly defeated and you forced him to make eye contact with you.
“If I wasn’t with you, I wouldn’t have any of the support I have now. I’d have Emma and my parents but that’s it. Jensen, you’ve done so much already.” Jensen wrapped his arms around you and cradled you to his chest, resting his chin on top of your head as you both looked out at the water together. “I’ve been doing some thinking too.”
“What about?” Jensen questioned.
“Moving in with you permanently.” You said. “I remember most of that conversation from the hospital and you said you didn’t wanna push me then. I’ve been thinking about it. I want to. I could rent out my house or sell it.”
“You’re sure.” Jensen shifted positions to look at you, gauging your response.
“100%. Never been more sure of -” Before you could finish your sentence, Jensen’s lips were on yours, taking your breath away.
“Best news ever.” Jensen kissed your lips between each word, making you smile and giggle. “I’ll get Jared and we’ll start moving your stuff in.” You smiled and nodded, leaning over to attack kiss him for once.
You didn’t want this day to end. It had been absolutely perfect so far, but you were worn out from the activity. The yawn that you tried to hide gave you away and he kissed your forehead before getting up to drive the boat home. “It’s late. Let’s get you home and get you some rest.”
“Home.” You repeated. “I like the sound of that.”
“Yeah, me too.” Jensen agreed, a bright smile lighting up his face in the darkness. “Our home.”
