Naruto 635: On Karin’s words

I’ve read both versions from Mangastream and Mangapanda, and because of the variances in the translations, I can’t help but feel like I’m reading a story told from two different points of view with inserted biases. But what I’m more concerned about is how Karin’s words are mistranslated (again) and misinterpreted.
I agree with the others saying that Mangapanda has done a better translation for this chapter; however, it puts Karin in a bad spot.
Karin: He even tried to kill me… and it felt so good… no it didn’t!!
This sentence can make you think that Karin has turned into a masochist, then tries to deny it. Being a masochist is not that bad, if that’s her fetish then why shouldn’t we let her, right? What makes readers think it’s bad though is because it makes you think that Karin felt good about Sasuke killing her which is too extreme and borderline, but the truth is that’s not what she is actually talking about. If the sentence above is the only thing to consider, then we can conclude that she did felt good about almost getting killed by Sasuke.
However, that sentence does not stand alone. If we look into the context of her dialogue with Suigetsu then it takes a whole different meaning.
- First, she talks about how she likes Sasuke to be the only person biting her.
- After that Suigetsu calls on her openly admitting that she loves/likes Sasuke.
- She gets flustered, getting caught off-guard by Suigetsu.
- And then she denies it, but because she is flustered she rambles on incoherently (because I guess when Karin is flustered she gets rather incomprehensible, probably fumbling for words), which Suigetsu comments on too.
Suigetsu: What the hell are you saying? / What are you rambling on about now?
What Karin actually meant to say:
- She’s denying she likes Sasuke.
- She’s reminding Suigetsu that Sasuke tried to kill her, which reinforces the idea why she can’t possibly like Sasuke. (in denial again)
- And then mentioning Sasuke makes her think of him, which reminds her of her previous statement about the biting, and because she’s flustered she accidentally says it feels so good (this is the slip of the tongue, lol) but then she corrects her self to deny it all over again.
On the next panel though, she admits it and does not deny it.
Even though Suigetsu thought that Karin didn’t make any sense, he still got a wind of that “felt so good” phrase so he went back on the topic of biting by talking about “Sasuke’s bite marks on her” to bait her, and it seemed that Karin didn’t even notice because she didn’t deny it this time.
Karin: Shut up! Now I’m only for him! / Shut it! I’m only for Sasuke’s personal use!
And so, Suigetsu felt satisfied about being right and moves on to infuriate her by picking on the teeth marks and pointing out her weirdness.
In conclusion, Karin’s head was full of mambo-jumbo when she accidentally said that “it felt so good”, because she got caught (about liking Sasuke and liking him biting her, which proves a point) with her own mouth by Suigetsu nonetheless.
Sometimes sentences are misinterpreted when they are read for simply what they seem than what they actually mean.
In the case of mistranslations, which are quite often but I can’t blame translators, let’s just take note of the fact that some Japanese words just don’t have exact English counterparts. So, there will definitely be times when some phrases will be lost in translation, especially if the original Japanese word is rather ambiguous and is used to make a pun or a joke or have a play in words.
And I’m still talking about this word - “it felt so good” which was translated from “tamaranai” or “たまらない”.
tamaranai may loosely mean = intolerable, unbearable, irresistible, out of this world, cannot help (doing), cannot but do, anxious to do
In the Japanese language, its meaning would depend on how it’s used and the words that go with it. For now, I’m betting on the translators taking it as “irresistible” or “can’t help it” or “out of this world” for the “felt so good” thing.
Although I’d still be counting on the raws more. We’d still have to wait for the actual kanji/kana.

I couldn’t help (tamaranai, lol) but write this because I don’t want people who are not anti-sasukarin and anti-Karin to have a reason to hate Karin for something as petty as a mistranslation or misinterpretation.
