the woodland eyes watch the girl pick her path and stay on it

as they follow her down it

she thinks

they cannot see her

but the woodland eyes see everyone who enters their domain

the girl isn’t even looking at the path she’s trusted her life with

she wishes she could

imagine

the world through

anyone else’s eyes besides her own but she can’t see past her fears

it’s a while that she’s been walking before something steps forward

out of the brush

a bird

black as the sun

a representative of those who watch her every step with fixed eyes

silent

watching her every move

looking at her with dark and stormy eyes unseen it doesn’t speak

not even to ask for her

name

time

is what it calls itself

though whether the girl knows this or not is no concern of the bird’s

she is a figment of

reality

the girl

doesn’t speak to the blackbird

it will let her leave the woodland once she has spent a hundred years and

when she learns time is just a
