Wilana slowly opens her eyes and lets out a groan. She raises her head and the sound of claws scraping against bark catches her attention. She looks around and spots the figure she saw before passing out the horned canine. Who is he?
The horned canine growls and halts the movement of his claw. He glances back at her and places his paw down. His crimson glowing eyes make her shiver.
"Are you not afraid? Are you not surprised by what you've become?" He says, tilting his head to the side.
Wilana stares at him blankly. She slowly gets up on all fours and raises a hoof, pointing at him.
"I came here. I came here for answers. Answers that no one else possessed. Yet you question me? I don't even know why I'm this color! The others won't accept me for what I am!" She cries, slamming her hoof down.
The horned canine covers his black fur in shadows and stands on his hind legs. He points a claw at her and howls. "You are the Keeper of Shadows. We have chosen one born of light to guide us. To save us. You, Wilana, are the Unicorn of Shadows" he explains.
The dark unicorn froze in her spot. No she thought it can't be. Why me? Am I destined to fall to their plea? To be the tainted light?
She lowers her head and stares down at her furry hooves. Is this what she is? Was she always to be this way? Part of her didn't want to believe this. It was all so confusing.
"Do you not object? Do you not whisper a word of disbelief?" He questions her.
Wilana quickly raises her head to meet the eyes of the beast. "Who are you?" She asks, trying to muster the courage to say more.
The horned canine chuckles and sits down. He eyes her then gives her a toothy grin. "You many call me Renfir" he says, getting up and bowing his head down.
Wilana lifts a hoof to her mouth and snorts. "Renfir? Really? That sounds like your trying no to say Fenir" she laughs.
"I am not!" he growls defensively, "Well, I can't exactly take that name for...um...reasons" he adds, looking away from her.
For some odd reason a glimmer of hope sank in the back of her mind. If she couldn't be with them. With their light. She could be with the shadows. It was the only reasonable decision to be made. No longer would she be alone.
"Well, Renfir, what do you suppose we do now? I mean I guess to an extent I've reasoned with myself. If I'm to be alone in the light might as well walk along with the shadows" she sighs.
Renfir opens his mouth to protest but closes his mouth in awe. "You...you're okay with this? Your mind has been made up too quickly. There's no way you can just s-"
"I told you already. I've made up my mind. Now where are we headed?" She quickly interrupts him.
Excitement tingles in her legs and her oddly colored eyes sparkle. She then gives her a grin and gallops past him.
Renfir huffs in annoyance and follows behind her. For some reason it seems as though the unicorn was making her own path. He didn't even say where they were going to head to.

Months have passed and she knew she was ready. Her powers have grown. They have grown more than she could have imagined.
Wilana stands in front of the alter and slowly makes her way up top it. She turns around and throws herself on to the throne. She shifts her body around and coughs in embarrassment. Wilana finally regains her posture and sits up, puffing her chest out and lifting her head to the sky.
A roaring cheer ripples across a large crowd of shadowy creatures. They cheer in delight and chant her by many names.

She lifts a hoof and they stomp, creating a wave of sound across the area. Wilana clears her throat and the crowd dies down. A few murmurs of concern reach her and she smiles wryly.
She spots a familiar horned canine walking towards her. She smiles and he bows her head. In between his jaws is a silver goblet.
Renfir gently places it down in front of her. This is her test. If she lit it on fire and the goblet turned to ash, she was worthy.
Wilana steps down from the throne. She raises her horn to the sky and closes her eyes. One, two, three...she whispers to herself. A shadowy ember of fire lights the tip of her horn. She carefully taps her horn to the goblet and the ember floats down.
After what felt like forever, the crowd begins to murmur again. Wilana opens her eyes and they flash white. Then the ember, that settled itself inside the goblet, engulfed the silver body. With a burst of fire, the goblet reduced to nothing but ash. The crowd roars.
Wilana takes a breath and glances up at Renfir. He smiles and she bows down. No longer was she Wilana the Unknown. She was now Wilana the Keeper of Shadows. The Unicorn of Shadows.
