I pressed my mask firmer over my mouth and looked around me. Not a single soul was in sight and the houses stood after their overgrown hedges and grass. The sole sound audible in my surroundings was of the birds chirping and dogs barking in distance. I pulled a new set of surgical gloves out of the cupboard and extended them to my covered wrists. My stomach grumbled, but I left it unnoticed. I hadn't eaten food for a whole day and was surviving solely on wine and water. Do toffees classify as food? Oh, of course. But it was time I get out of the house and stock myself up with more mountains of diet coke and candy floss flavoured ice cream. After all, quarantine is the only time when I can eat them without showing off how gross the way I eat ice cream is. Don't judge me too quick, now. I unlocked the front door and stepped on the porch. And out of the blue, my most shared meme struck me, 'the sunlight hits hard when it's illegal' . Definitely. I smiled to myself and went off to Wal-mart. I kept consoling my hungry stomach to have patience, that we will be enjoying over our favorite ice cream and feast ourselves to the extent where we develop a after-quarantine-look.
'You're already fat, Katherine.' said the stomach thought. Agreed. I find myself quite fine without some six abs drawn over my belly.
I was rolling by the tall abandoned buildings now which stood dusty and still, gleaming in the sun light when I noticed a car drive by me. I giggled to myself as it rolled past me. The teen girl driving it had her blonde hair stuck in the window by the glass and she didn't seem to notice it. It made me reminded of similar memes and I laughed some more. It was all fun until the red ford stopped and it accelerated backwards to the spot where I stood. What now? I'm hungry!
The girl looked away from the front window and clicked open the door, but no sooner she stood, a hollow shriek rang in my ears. She had just realized her hair had been stuck in the window when the car door pulled her back with her which she just closed. I couldn't control it longer and allowed myself to laugh loudly over the spot. I saw a tall boy around the girl's age appear out of the car. He had an expression over his face which cleared it that he had been suppressing his laughter too. He rushed beside the so-insta-model and fumbled with the buttons over the car door, attempting to lower the glass window down. I laughed constantly the whole time.
'So! Why were you giggling, idiot? What do you see on my face, huh? Your ugly reality? Cause it can be the only thing I see funny here!' said the blonde.
'What are you talking about?' I replied, even though I understood every bit of it, but enjoyed the fury over her face, nevertheless.
'I saw you laughing at me when I drove by. Any defense?' she turned over to the guy and clicked her fingers in my direction. He looked up at me and passed an apologizing look as the girl started again.
'Say something, Brett!'
'Okay, hold up there, insta queen. First of all, I can laugh whenever I want and at whomsoever I like. Second of all, what has this guy to do with any of this? Too scared to defend yourself?' I said.
I was extremely hungry and this girl was turning the situation worse.
'You..! And why are you wearing a bunny headband with a sandal and a boot?' she laughed mockingly, pointing to my feet. I, in my stand, only have to say that, it looks awesome.
'Oh my god, Karen! You can't just ask people why they wear a bunny headband with a sandal and a boot!..even if it looks cute on them,' muttered the guy.
This made me laugh louder than ever. The girl scowled and grabbed the guys' hand and pulled him back to the car. He tried to resist but then let himself pass away with her before he jerked back, freeing his wrist from the girls' grip.
'Wait, love. I...I...yeah, I need to text someone.' he said, pulling out his mobile from his denim pocket.
'You can do that in the car!' she boomed.
The guy ignored his girlfriend and pressed keys against the phone screen with all of his attention fixed upon it. A few moments by, I could see the red ford drive farther from me up till the point it wasn't visible anymore. I smiled to myself, playing the latest incident in my head and reminding myself of it. I resumed my pace and brought my mobile out to check for the latest feeds I had received when I noticed something I had not expected. That guy had airdropped me his number...
'...and that's how we met, kids.' I said as I patted Brett's shoulder, signaling him to our kids.
