古典歐洲哲學家萊布尼兹曾提出一個叫作possible world的概念，意思是指除了我們現在正在處於的世界外，還有無限個與我們所在的世界一樣真實的世界，而每當我們在想及一些可能性時，那些可能性就會在某一個世界上真實發生。

而小說對我而言，就是一個possible world的存在。

先前有不少人提過小說是虛構的，現實是真實的。若以萊布尼兹的模型來看，現實與小說的真實性是沒有分別的。我們可以想像在某個遙遠的星球上，正正發生著跟小說裡一模一樣的情節。這當然是與我們今時今日的宇宙觀有所不同，但作為一種概念上的認知，這種觀念是有助我們去了解的。
