故事背景日本幕府末年維新志士時代，日本武士道精神，殺人劍與救人劍。

主角劍心，曾經的劊子手拔刀齋，從東京到京都以及後來的西洋騎士道、基督教，中國風水玄學，融合了東西方文化，再加上實際存在的歷史人物點綴了幾個故事線的內容，蠻豐富的一部作品。
