Twelve year old Giles wakes up in a hospital bed, but does not remember how he got there or who the two strangers are that appear at his bedside when he breaks a glass of water. They introduce themselves as Max and Rex, and claim that Giles saved all of their lives. Later, a doctor explains that Giles suffers from memory loss, and that it will take a while to regain them, if at all.
