Brooklyn
I’ve been waiting for this day since I was old enough to read. Today is my first day as an editorial intern at James Publishing. I have loved literature as long as I can remember. As a child, my mother would read to me every night before bed, it went from simple books for children to novels. As a teenager I became more and more interested in reading and writing. Authors like Jane Austin and Emily Brontë were major inspirations and they are authors to not only classic romance novels, but some of my all time favorite novels as well.
It’s been my dream for as long as I can remember to work for a publishing company and maybe help many young, talented author get their start. I think about these things as I turn off my alarm and get out of bed. I walk into the kitchen of my small Los Angels apartment and grab a quick breakfast. I shower and put on a little makeup. I pull my long blond hair up into a nice, neat bun and put on the new, blue dress I bought just for this day. I take one last look in the mirror, grab my purse and walk out the door.
When I arrive at the parking garage at my new job, I frantically park my car and hurry inside. As I walk through the door I can see my bright future ahead of me. I walk confidently up to the front desk and inform the receptionist that I am the lead editorial advisors new assistant. I am really excited to work with Jules, she seems really sweet and I think I can learn a lot from her. The receptionist informs me that my office is on the 4th floor so I get on the elevator, press the number 4 button and patiently wait for the doors to open. To my surprise, the doors open on the 2nd floor and a tall, dark haired man steps in. He looks at me for a couple seconds too long, as I do the same. I smile at him and he returns the gesture. He is very attractive and I can smell his cologne as he steps into the elevator. I ask him what floor he is going too and walk towards the key pad to press the number that he says.
“Five please” he says in a thick English accent.
“Okay, you got it.” I say quietly.
I push the number and patiently wait for the elevator doors to open at my desired floor. When they do I step out and search for my office. I keep thinking about the mystery guy in the elevator. I shouldn’t be thinking about another guy being attractive when I have an amazing boyfriend back home, but the floor he was going too fascinated me on another level. The 5th floor is where the president of the company’s office is and i haven’t worked here long, and maybe it’s different here, but usually only the president and the very important members of the board are supposed to be on that floor.
I push this to the back of my mind as I approach my new office. My name is written on a thick piece of steel on the door. I can’t believe that I have my own office let alone my name on the door. I turn the knob and walk in to the teal colored room. There is a huge window and the back of the small office that has a great view of the city. My desk is strategically placed in front of the large window with a note from my boss and a stack of papers laying neatly on it. I walk over to the desk, pull out the chair, sit down and read the note.
“Brooklyn, I’m so excited to have you as my intern, you are very talented and I look forward to working with you!! Here is your first manuscript, have it on my desk by this afternoon. Enjoy your first day!
-Jules”
I pull the note off the manuscript, grab a pen and begin to read. By lunch I had finished the manuscript and began editing it. By two I have finished editing the manuscript and I take it down the hall to Jules. She is very pleased with my work and encourages me to take the rest of the afternoon off. I walk back to my office with a huge smile on my face, grab my things and walk to the elevator. When I get on the elevator I push the number one button and wait patiently. When the door opens at the lobby I see the mystery elevator guy yelling at the receptionist.
“You are a terrible employee, you have jeopardized my business in so many ways and I will not have it, your fired. Get your crap and get out. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Slut.” I hear him say angrily.
I am shocked by this, he seemed very nice and upstanding when I encountered him in the elevator earlier this morning. I walk quickly out the door to the parking garage. As I am getting into my car, my phone rings, it’s Nathan. Nathan is my boyfriend from back home. We have been best friends since we were five, but when we went to college, we decided that we would try to be more and it’s going really well. Nathan is still in college and I would be as well if I hadn’t have skipped 3 years and graduated early. I took most of my college classes while I was still in high school which left me with only one year of college to complete after graduation. When I answer the phone Nathan sounds really happy.
“Hey Brooklyn, how was your day?” He says happily.
“Hey Nathan, it’s so good to hear your voice. My day was awesome!”
“Was your first day as a fancy James Publishing intern just as good as you expected it to be.” He questions
“It was better! How was your day?” I say back.
“It was good, just missing you. Do you have plans tonight? I thought I could drive up so we could have dinner. How does that sound?” He says quickly.
“Yeah that would be great! I know a great restaurant. I’ll send you the address and meet you there at around 8pm. Sound good?” I say excitedly.
“Sounds good, see you there. Love you.” He says and then hangs up.
I’m so glad that he is coming, I’ve missed him so much. I can’t wait to tell him about my first day.
