Whoopity-fuck.
I don’t swear often, but today’s an exception.
I spent the entire break searching for the right person to observe for the exercise, but couldn’t concentrate on one person; especially when their thoughts were all I could hear. So now, here I am, sitting on one of the bleachers outside and watching students fight each other on the field.
Beside me is a group of girls from my class, chatting, giggling and oogling the boys on the field.
And that’s why I said, whoopity-fuck.
At first, I didn’t know why they were here. I thought, maybe they wanted to be my friend. But no, they didn’t even notice me.
Turns out, they were all here to observe one person: some guy named June. Apparently he’s a student in his fourth year and teaches the younger students self defence classes.

Okay, that’s enough. I stand up, stretching my arms. I’ve finished all my classes for today, so I can go home. I’ll observe people another—
Oh, he’s coming here!
I turn to the person who thought that. It’s the girl with the curly blonde hair. I didn’t even notice her.
“You guys, he’s coming here!”
“Shh! He’ll hear you! Let’s pretend we’re doing our work.”
I look out on the field, and true to their words, I see a tall figure approaching. I slowly sit back down. What? I’m curious. Their thoughts have raised my expectations.
Once he’s within hearing distance, I’m finally able to see him properly: dark hair with even darker eyes and a killer smile.
It’s like time has stopped, not because of his good looks, but because when I try to take a peak in his mind, I’m pushed out.
I frown. What just happened.
When he reaches the bleachers, he walks up the stairs and sits on a chair a row below us. He looks up at the girls with a heart-stopping grin.
“Hey,” he says. “Are you guys here to sign up for the class?”
The girls giggle, some shaking their heads.
“No, we’re here just to watch,” says the blonde girl from before. She holds up the sheet the professor gave us. “We have to observe how people act in public.”
He pushes back the hair from his eyes with a slight frown. “Oh, I see. Is that for class?”
While they talk, I take the opportunity to try looking in his mind again. But nothing happens. I can’t read anything. It’s like continually bumping into a wall.
I try again, and this time, instead of bumping into a ‘wall’, I feel as though I’m kicked out by an invisible force. Wide eyed, I stare at him. That was weird and freaky.
I rest my chin on my knuckles. My eyes roam his face, from his nose to his plump lips, and his long, dark lashes that flicker whenever he blinks. When he laughs, he tilts his head back a little, and when he pouts, his brows furrow. He looks disgustingly cute, and I can’t even read his thoughts. That annoys me.
So I do the one thing I’m good at: I glare at him. I glare and glare and glare and glare, and imagine my eyes burning holes in the side of his head. Even when he looks at me, I continue glari—wait, what?
I blink and straighten my back. He’s looking at me. I glance at the girls beside me. They’re looking at me too. Why is everyone looking at me?
Is she going to answer?
I didn’t even know she was here...
...idiot...
What an embarrassment.
My eyes narrow at the girls. Why are they insulting me? “Is there a problem?” I ask, looking at all of them.
SHE SPEAKS.
I ignore that.
“Who are you doing?” The guy—June—asks.
“Huh?” Maybe I should’ve listened to their conversation.
June’s lips twitch up into a small smile. “For the exercise, I mean,” he says. “Who are you observing?”
I open my mouth to speak, but he cuts me off.
“I don’t mind if you’re here to observe me.” He gives the girls a pointed look. “At least someone will be.”
My brows furrow. I thought the girls were here for him.
Say no, says no.
The blonde girl repeats that same phrase in her mind. From the corner of my eye, I see her fist tighten around the pencil.
I don’t know what gives me the courage to say it. I usually like to stay away from situations like these, and maybe it’s because she called me an embarrassment, I don’t know, but I find myself saying, “yeah, I actually am observing you.”
