According to Plato, a philosopher king is a ruler who possesses both a love of knowledge, as well as intelligence, reliability, and a willingness to live a simple life. Such are the rulers of his utopian city Kallipolis. For such a community to ever come into being, "philosophers [must] become kings...or those now called kings [must]...genuinely and adequately philosophize" (Plato The Republic, 5.473d).

American politicians today who are associated with democratic socialism generally favor New Deal-style programs, believing that government is a force for good in people's lives and that a large European-style welfare state can exist in a capitalist society. The DSA is the latest incarnation of a long-running socialist movement in America that dates back to the turn of the 20th century. The Socialist Party of America was established in 1901. Its best-known leader was Eugene Debs, the five-time presidential candidate and workers' rights leader made famous by the Pullman strikes that helped inspire the creation of Labor Day.
When the DSA was founded in 1982 by Michael Harrington, who dropped out of Yale Law School to join the Catholic Worker Movement, it had lofty goals: it appeared to be an attempt to bring socialists together again after that earlier split, while incorporating the interests of the women's movement, civil rights movement, gay rights movements and other social movements born in the '60s, all while also acknowledging that socialism's moment as a political party in America had passed. Its organizers believed it could be more useful as what some have called basically a lobbying group to the Democratic Party, pushing the mainstream liberal party further left. Harrington described his group's stance as "the left wing of the possible" and he knew from first-hand experience that such influence could be powerful: the Great Society programs of Lyndon Johnson's presidency were partly inspired by Harrington's book The Other America: Poverty in the United States.

Marx's theories about society, economics and politics – collectively understood as Marxism – hold that human societies develop through class struggle. In capitalism, this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes (known as the bourgeoisie) that control the means of production and the working classes (known as the proletariat) that enable these means by selling their labour power in return for wages.[16] Employing a critical approach known as historical materialism, Marx predicted that, like previous socio-economic systems, capitalism produced internal tensions which would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system: socialism.
