七宗罪在拉丁語中為：「superbia」（傲慢），「invidia」（嫉妒），「ira」（憤怒），「accidia」（懶惰），「avaritia」（貪婪），「gula」（暴食）和「luxuria」（色慾）。在重新排列後，它們的第一個字母可以形成中世紀拉丁語「saligia」，然後衍生出其動詞「saligiare」（去實行一條罪名，to commit a deadly sin）。
