Tears fell from Elsie’s eyes like diamonds as they laid her friend’s limp body down in the boat. Goodwin, Vandenberg, Fiona, Herschel and Riley watched as Jack beat down desperately on her chest. Doctor O’Donnell quickly began breathing into Tilly’s mouth and that was without a doubt the longest sixty seconds of their lives. Indeed, Elsie had never before felt so helpless. What else could she feel? She thought her friend had drowned.
In fact, Tilly came remarkably close to drowning, but then, in a choking spasm she coughed up a spurt of water and sat up, drastically taking in a massive lungful of air. She continued to cough and heave for moments after, and Elsie embraced her with all the love that she could possibly bear to give. In their embrace Elsie’s tears turned from those of dread to those of joy. It is unlikely that words could ever express such a feeling of friendship.
In the gathering of the storm their tiny little lifeboat drifted away from the churning and gurgling waters where the VS Rosanne used to be. Now they set their eyes for the safety of the VS Jade 4. Well, it was a difficult situation because they could just as easily make their way for the nearest island, but once again they still had a task to perform, and Professor Goodwin nor his companions were at all willing to let the men aboard the VS Jade 4 fall victim to the terrors of the colossal. So yes, for them it was hardly a choice.
Although their minds may have been swayed just a little upon the sight that later enveloped before them. As they cruised hastily towards the VS Jade 4 they listened to the sudden beat and echo of mortar fire, and they watched the water to the portside of their ship arise like a white mountain. “She is attacking,” Vandenberg breathed, and then he turned away and covered his eyes.
Professor Goodwin urged them to increase their speed. “We have to get them off that ship before the monster slaughters every last one of them!” But alas they feared it was too late. From afar they felt the terror of those colossal arms explode from the sea and latch onto the VS Jade 4, and then they saw the mantle of Specimen Zero rise up like some kind of sea-god, and its giant eyes gazed down with hatred for the petty mortals beneath it. A volley of fire rocked the deck of the VS Jade 4, and the combined blast was so powerful that they felt it all the way out in the lifeboats. They felt the bitter anguish and piercing agony of Specimen Zero’s shrieks as well, and the terrible noise seemed to spread throughout the entire ocean in one treacherous wave. And then in the blink of an eye the beast was gone.
Elsie must have blinked a dozen times just to ensure that she saw it right. “Did they kill it?” she asked, to no one in particular.
Vandenberg answered, and his voice was grave and low. “No. They may have injured her, but she will retreat to regain her strength, and then she will return. We have perhaps half an hour to save these people. I can assure you that my creation is merciless, and it was not lose twice.” His words were frightening, but true. They had to get those people to the islands immediately.
