Chris checked the reservation before completing the purchase on his laptop. He packed his suitcase, leaving a little bit of room for knick-knacks and souvenirs.
He was surprised he hadn’t heard back from David. Chris remembered leaving a lengthy voice mail all about Dr. Waterstein. And about the woman, Daisy who he had spoken to hours before.
Chris left from where he sat on Sarah’s side of the bed, where her pillow felt so cold. He stood at the front of his desk and stared at the papers which were stacked in uneven piles. He couldn’t believe he would let things get this out of hand. As he organized his workspace his mind wandered back to Sarah. He couldn’t believe he betrayed her by putting his hands on her.
The doorbell rang and he knocked a pile of papers from his desk onto the floor. He barely managed to step over them. “I’ll be right there,” Chris said picking up the papers and tossing them onto the desk.
He looked through the peephole and was surprised who stood on the other side of the door. “What do you want?” Chris shouted to the person.
“I need to talk to you” a quiet voice replied.
Chris whipped opened the door standing face to face with Jane, his secretary.
“Why did you come to my house? My wife could be-”
“I doubt she’ll be here anytime soon,” Jane said stepping into the Matthews apartment.
“Get out of my house!” Chris furrowed his eyebrows and folded his arms across his chest.
“I'm here to apologize.” Chris could smell her perfume as she walked closer to him.
“What are you talking about?” Chris said closing the door.
“Remember the office party?”
“Yes, what about it?”
“I shouldn’t have let you drive me home.”
“You were wasted. I couldn’t let you drive.”
“I could have called a cab or walked. You know I walk to the office every day.”
“Yeah, but still…” Chris glanced down at the floor.
“Also I’m sorry if I upset Sarah when you drove me home.”
“I didn’t tell her,” Chris said looking up and back at Jane.
“Why not?”
“I didn’t want to cause any issues.”
“Look…” Jane said holding her hands up in surrender when she continued, “I don’t want to start anything between the two of you. I just wanted to stop by and say I’m sorry.”
“You could have talked to me at the office.”
“I didn’t want to disturb you during work hours.”
“So instead you come to my home? Can you leave?”
“But I-”
“Go!” Chris shouted at Jane who had tears glistening in her eyes. He watched her slowly walk out of the apartment and down the hallway.
Chris slammed the door shut and his phone rang which sat on his desk. Rushing over he answered, “Hello…Hi David…Is she okay?…No I haven’t talked to her…I’ll go over now.” Chris hung up the phone and headed to David’s condo.

“Sarah?” Chris said opening the door to David’s home. Walking inside he shed his coat on the hook near the front door. Sighing he saw Sarah curled up on the couch asleep with a photograph of him and Jane in her hand.
