Trrrrrring........ The clock besides the bed was showing 8 ‘o clock. Adam woke up with a gorgy head, from the hangover last night. He looked out of the window, the sky was overcast and wind was rustling, but it felt like everything had stopped. There was a lot of noise but no sound. It perfectly matched the insides of Adam’s heart and mind which had became soulless for quite some time. His life was going nowhere, he had messed up his grades in most of the subjects and was unlikely to do good ahead, and he didn’t have many friends to share his woes and worries. He lived away from his family for the sake of his studies. Suddenly carol came into his mind “I need to talk to registrar today or else I am going to remain struck here forever” Hmmm! He thought “Atleast she is coming to college. Although what does she means remain struck?”. He hurried to get ready and had some breakfast of yesterday’s left over.
“I need to keep my thoughts in check, it’s been getting rough around here” Adam thought on way. He was not like other normal teenagers; he had a gift, which allowed him to peak in any person’s mind. Although mind-numbing and amazing, it had a curse. After 50 thoughts of any single person, that another person could see that ONE worst thing about themselves, which Adam had thought about them after reading their minds, if they ever thought about him. Due to this curse, Adam couldn’t over think about anyone. A seemingly impossible task! But fortunately Adam had learned to keep a good control over his mind, to curb the thoughts. He was a shy person, not quickly mixing and normally didn’t give a thought about anything or anyone. But carol, she was the only person that made Adam loose his mental faculties. Adam tried hard, not to think about her and he was successful till some extent, but she was in his mind and heart. Their relationship had only been from 6 months but it had already come on the verge of breakup. Both were trying to keep up from their sides but in vain. Adam, no matter what was still trying to connect loose ends. He had been lonely all his life and suddenly carol had showered him with emotions, love and care, Things that people crave for throughout their lives. He was quite happy with it and wasn’t ready to be alone again.
He reached the university around 9.30. The Redington College in Massachusetts was bustling with crowd. It was as if the outside atmosphere had no effect on it. Here campus felt alive and vibrant with people running here and there. The chatting, the smiles and laugh of teenagers hanging out, Couples exchanging shy glances, holding hands, having a romantic conversation over a coffee. ‘First love! How amazing it seems’ Adam thought. He kept musing over it while walking towards their spot, place where he first saw carol. It wasn’t like love at first sight but they were quite alike. She was also shy and silent type of girl, from there exchanging shy glances to over a coffee in canteen, bunking classes, going to library. It was still early and young. But it was on verge of breakup because of their mismatching attitudes. They talked a lot, but communicated very less. Sure carol was a bit shy but not as much as of Adam, who literally had friends whom he can count on his fingers. Also her life was planned and systematic and ambitious, giving priorities to all important things. Quite opposite was of Adam’s, who was carefree and happy-go-lucky types. He had flunked in studies, never excelled at sports or had any hobby. He saw life from a different perspective, enjoying it to the fullest every moment. Although carol tried to bring much change in his life, still it wasn’t enough for both. Whenever they tried talking about it, it always ended with one yelling at another, bringing them more apart. Also carol’s parents were not really happy when they learned that she was going out with a guy who couldn’t care much about anything. Both still liked each other, but it wasn’t .....
She came around 10 minutes later. Inspite of the tension, he couldn’t help but notice how beautiful she looked! She wore white peace sign t-shirt and a flowing lavender skirt with printed design on it. She accessorised it with a lovely purple stone necklace. “Hey, sorry I am late. The traffic is increasing day by day.” “Yeah, how are you?” Adam asked, least interested about traffic. “I am fine actually; my niece is around so we spend some great time together. How are you Adam? Have you worked on your history project?” “Yeah, I have started but it’s tough, going everyday to archaeological department to submit those reports. It’s like a madhouse there; you have to cosy up people to get your work done.” “Hmm, I can understand” Carol said. An awkward moment of silence passed. “So listen, I need to tell you something” Carol said breaking silence “ The Yale university accepted my proposal to do research on advanced Ecology, also I have got permission from my fellow HOD for it” “ Wait, are you leaving this to go to states!?, but...” Oh yes, that registrar thing, Adam sighed. “He said it is a great opportunity and would give my career a good headstart” she said slowly. “But you can always do something or the other here? Are you leaving on purpose?” he said. “Please don’t start again. I am in no mood to fight right now. Besides it will give us much needed time and space, maybe we are not ready, maybe we need time to reconsider it.” “Okay then! I will let you decide; are we breaking up or are you ditching me? Should we say ‘I do I do’?” Adam could no longer control his angriness. “Please Adam, don’t take it in this way” “Then in what way huh? You didn’t even ask me about it. Just decided yourselves, you always think of your career, your life, and your goals. But what about us!? Or should I ask was there any future of us?” Tear rolled down her cheek “I am sorry” Adam felt instantly guilty. “No I am sorry Adam. I am sorry that I thought about you. I am sorry for thinking about you and your life, you cleared my doubts thank you” She said and hurried towards the main building. “Carol wait... carol” He stood there silently.
“I can’t wait to ditch my boyfriend!” “That stupid teacher and her rants!” “I should be having pizza tonight”.... Adam was not able to control his mind. His mind kept buzzing like a telephone; it wouldn’t happen normally even in the worst state of his mind. But today was different; the person who had captured his mind was going away, how could he have controlled it? He sat for his physics lecture, but his mind kept going on the argument they had in the morning. “I need to resolve this. How can I allow her to go? She definitely likes me or does she! Am I thinking too much?” His mind kept on the thoughts running. Human mind, no matter how logically or rationally it thinks, It comes in the same state like everyone’s where emotions are involved. It had already dawned upon him. Physics didn’t intrigue him, so he decided to pass his time by reading people’s thought. It was very unusual of him, but he was sure of not going to cross the 50’s limit. Also his shy and immixing attitude means people couldn’t care less about him to read that one thought of his mind. The time passed by but it still dragged slow for Adam. One time he even felt to just run out the class to her, apologise to her, correct the situation and never ever let her go. He had a powerful gift, but was normal human when it came to this. He can’t help but think about first time they met, he remembered every moment of it. He saw her, they talked, fell in love and suddenly this aimless guy had a new reason to live for. He did everything, just to make her happy. There is saying that when a woman comes into your life, it gets organized itself. Same was happening here. But what now? One had to remind another to SMS if free, previously not a waking hour passed without one calling another.
Bell rang, he hurried out of the class towards that same place, she came “Listen carol, I am so sorry for my behaviour. I was a little distracted today, feeling low about this relationship. We haven’t communicated well for quite some time. But please! Don’t leave me. Just give it another chance, give me one chance to change myself. I want to make myself up to you. I will study hard, focus on my career more... everything! Just please don’t leave me like this.” He spoke in one breath. “Adam... I...” She couldn’t say anything “Miss Evans, here are your transfer orders, be sure to register there by tomorrow morning” The attendant said and went away, slashing a knife through Adam’s heart. Tears welled up in her eyes, she walked away saying nothing. Gust of wind blew on Adam’s face and lines felt cold, he touched and was surprised to find himself in tears too. His mind, crowded by thoughts suddenly fell silent picturing her and only her. He started walking away. The daylight was on its way of falling and atmosphere was still grey. Rain was about to fall. But the insides of Adam were drenched anyway. He was walking towards his home in semi-trance state, aware of nothing of the world around him. He was in no state to even think about anything. “Go back!! Go back and tell her, tell her how much you love her, don’t let her go....” “She won’t change her decision now, it’s too late. Besides I am loser for her, good for nothing. Bid her farewell and wish her luck for rest of your life, try to move on!” The rational and irrational mind of him kept arguing. He didn’t even realized he was crossing road, suddenly he felt a strong push on his back, he was thrown away on the road. He slowly opened his eyes to see a red car was the culprit and drifted away.
The taxi was going at the speed of 60 km/hr, but carol’s mind was racing faster then it. She was late already. She had to report by tomorrow, “I need to check in some hotel for tonight. Hope it’s close to Yale. And submit my pre-project work by tomorrow or there will be no grades on it. And... God I am messed up. Don’t know how I will manage.” She reached the airport and quickly completed her ticket and visa process. Unfortunately, due to bad weather, the flight was running late. She was worried, but nothing could be done. She went to waiting lounge there and sat there staring at the view outside the window; a couple was sitting near it. They looked like in mid 30’s. Hand in hand, unaware of the world around them. He lightly caressed on her head. Carol skipped a heartbeat, Adam instantly came to her mind, he touched her head the same way, and how he used to make her smile when she was feeling low. “Am I going wrong? Should I wait? No one has meant me more than him. I can wait for some time and continue my coursework here and go some other time. I need him as much as he needs me.....” She thought.
“Nurse give me that injection! Keep monitoring his pulse rate. Call anaesthetist, we need to remove that bone. His condition is very critical.” The ICU was buzzing; doctor and nurses were running here and there. Different types of tubes were attached to Adam’s body who laid motionless. His head was still whirring due to internal bleeding. His half-shut eyes could see the bare minimum. “Am I going wrong? Should I wait? No one has meant me more than him. I can wait for some time and continue my coursework here and go some other time. I need him as much as he needs me.....” he could clearly see her thoughts. Despite in so much pain, he felt a strong calmness in his mind. Pain just went away for some time, for some time!! “His chances of surviving are very less. He needs to stay awake for next 2 hours or he will enter into Coma. God help him, Are his parents or anyone is here?” Doctor was telling. Adam thought about him and Carol. “No, She needs to go. I don’t want her to find out about this or she will break. I cannot let her ruin her life for me.” Adam made up his mind. He thought about his power of 50 thoughts and curse attached with it. And what he did was unthinkable.
“The flight to states is now ready for boarding. Passengers are requested to move towards gate no. 3. Thank you” Announcement was made. Carol was startled by it; she picked up her bag and dragged herself slowly towards it. “Your ticket please” flight attendant at gate said. Carol thought one last time about him. Suddenly her mind started speaking; she heard something like never before “What a waste of time she was!! Good thing, she went away. Thank god, I will find another, who isn’t pesky like her. I am free now!!” She cannot believe her ears. Adam’s worst thought kept ringing in her heart and mind. She tried to control, but tears started flowing out of her carefully lined eyes. Her mind was too occupied to think about how she heard that. “Madam, Are you ok?” Flight attendant asked. Immediately she composed herself, wiping her eyes she said “Yes, everything is OK, just thinking about my parents. Here is my ticket” “Oh ok. Have a safe trip.” She went away. There in hospital, Adam was laid comfortably, nothing intrigued him now. His eyes were wide open but all he could see was her. He tried to focus, one last time. The 51st thought!! He tried and tried, but could see nothing......... A smile came to his face as the doctor closed his eyes.
