Miranda loved the beach as a girl. It was the one place she could always just be herself. She grew up on a little house on the sea shore, surrounded by cliffs with just a small stretch of beach. And oh, how my baby girl loved that beach. She made me bring my swim shorts whenever I came over, just so we could play in the sand. We would make these beautiful sand castles, and Miranda would hunt for seaweed and shells and driftwood and decorate them just wonderfully, even knowing they'd soon be destroyed. Miranda loved the beach as a teenager. They had moved, but not far, and to another seaside cottage. This one was completely open to the water, no cliffs at all. Just like the one before, we played and made sand castles. They were even more beautiful than ever before. One day, she made one and looked at me and said "This is where we'll live. You and me, in a little cottage by the sea." The sand castle she had made was so simple, but so elegant. It looked like her first home. I looked at her funny. I had never known Miranda liked me that way. I had always liked her, but she didn't know. I smiled and told her she was cute.
Miranda loved the beach as an adult. We had started dating when she was a junior in college. I proposed to her when we went scuba diving at a famous coral reef off the coast of where we grew up. She had a clownfish in her hands, and I had an angelfish in mine. "Will you be my angel? Forever?" I asked her over the radio system. The dive master and the other couple diving with us could hear, and they all smiled. She told me yes, and then reached out with her clownfish and told me she had named him Jeffery. Miranda was random like that.
Miranda wanted to get married on the beach. But not a beach with clear water. The first beach we ever played on, the one behind her first house. So I did some research and found that her house had been torn down, and that the site was now a public beach often used for weddings. It spoke nothing of the water, whether it was clear or murky or anything, only talked of the perfect white sand and the abundant sea shells. Miranda would love me. So I drove there to check it out, and make sure it was perfect. I stepped barefoot onto the sand and let the memories overwhelm me. I glanced around for a lifeguard to ask about the water, and made my way over there. The sand was hot underneath my feet, but I was used to it. It felt very nice, actually.
