I live in a world where it rests in my hand, and yet seems so far away. I live in a world where information is but a click away. But then, why do I see such empty pain in the eyes of my friends? I live in a world where we are can travel across the world in days – and yet why do I see so many lonely souls walking the streets. We are covered in string meant to pull us together, and yet the tin cans that we were meant to use have wrapped around our mouths. I bite through them, but each time the string binds tighter.
Love cannot be won in an instant – and yet I can judge a soul based off a photoshopped picture. Obesity is a right, not a health issue. Happiness is weighed in stuff and not life. Life is weighed by others and not by the one who gave it to you.
Everywhere I look I see mould grow on success. Success is either worshiped, or corrupted until it is a sham. Politicians rise as heroes and fall as skeletons, the meat torn off their bones and consumed by the powerful.
I fear this world. I fear for this world.
If a tree falls in a forest, will not the birds who roosted in it’s branches mourn? Will it mourn what the tree did for them, or for the trust it held as it protected the young resting in its leaves?
I will turn off my phone and communicate. I will look to the people I love for reassurance, not the people whose image is more computer code than emotion and feeling on my screen. I will shine a candle, even when people walk by and complain it keeps them awake.
Because somewhere, somehow, there’s a child looking for a fairy-story. There’s an elderly woman looking for a star to wish to in the fog. There’s a mother who can’t pay her power bill.
Did you know, reader of mine, that a teenage girl requires the same attention and love as a four-year-old? Did you know that? A child who plays in fairy dresses and plays with dolls is hiding within the heart of a teenage girl just wanting someone to tell her she is beautiful. Not pretty. No, more than that. Wants someone without a biased opinion to look at her and say that what they see is someone worth the wish on a star. Is worth a love song, a poem, a smile and compliment. My friends are desperate for that, for someone to take their hand and say they will rise and shine like stars. That when you look at her, you see a soul as bright as my candle light.
And truly mean it.
That is what this world needs. That is what we are parched for, desperate for.
For you to look beyond your screen, see the person next to you, opposite you, near you. And be kind.
Because if we do not contribute to the beauty we seek, we will become part of the mould growing on our communities, our countries, our world.
