Preface
I always knew I wasn’t human. When my mother gave birth to me, my brain was programmed to have spiritual disturbances and telepathic abilities.
In that case, I’m psychic.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not like “crystal balls,” “lightning bolts,” and “red eyes,” type of psychic. I’m more the less a telepathic person (I can communicate with my mind) and an unknown telekinetic ability.
Call me crazy, but I feel like my powers are a burden. Sure, I can read people’s minds and move things without lifting a finger, but I’ve had so many disturbances in my mind. It distracts me from doing things I love doing. And drawing anime was no exception.
Drawing anime was and is my life.
But something about my drawings haunted me.
I could never lay a finger on what it was.
How worse can my situations go?!

The Enemy
Yukanna Hito was the person I hated the most.
I ain’t care less if she had sho-jo ESP or somethin’. All I care is that she gets outta my face, runnin’ for the hills. But no, her stupid persistency and stubbornness makes me freaking cranky about my days.
All I can say is that she is a killjoy.
A killjoy indeed
, all day,
every day!
But what was this about “traumatic events” and all these “thriving destinies” that I keep hearing from her? Were they, by any chance, real? Heck, as I thought about it, I realized…
I was in her shoes.
The many times I denied that I was in this bad girl’s shoes…
Could she be…? No, the back of my mind screamed, she can’t.
I pushed that thought aside.
But for some reason, what he said still ran in my mind…

The Secrets I Hold
I am the Bearer of Forbidden Secrets.
No one knows. Jaclyn never knew; Katrina has no clue about this, but Ryou…!
I can’t believe I’m doing this! Keeping secrets from Ryou, my best friend… It feels guilty. Me, keeping secrets, secrets out of Yuka’s mouth!
She’s been telling me the cursed secrets I hold. For some reason, I totally understand why she keeps them from everyone else but me.
So I guess they aren’t cursed after all.
Did
I have senses? For some crazy reason, my dreams I dozed off on in bed always
came true one day or another. My thermometer’s mercury plummeted ten degrees
Fahrenheit every five minutes during the night. I’ve always had this feeling
that someone was watching me…
I figured out that my ridiculous ideals and creepy theories were true.
But I found out in the wrong time.
The time when it was too late.
Too late to turn back from what I have to face now.

The Emerging Fog
I like Ryou Aibou. He doesn’t know it, and I intend it to remain like that. There were so many times I spent with him, and the way he looks at me when we meet eye contact…
I shudder every time that happens. There was no doubt that he held a grudge against me for some reason…
Or was this something totally out of my hypothesis?!
But regardless of all that…
Someone’s after me. I don’t know who, but whenever I step foot on the school campus, I sense danger. My conscience forever nags me about this intuition. The throbbing feeling never ceases to bother me.
I soon realized that it was up to me to set things straight and rid of the evil here on this…place.
My name is Yukanna Hito, the Mysterious Shadow Girl of many enemies, or so they say.
I never knew who I really was. No one, not even my parents knew. Who was I, really? The answers remained unspoken. The situation wasn’t a big deal to me. It’s like thinking “Oh hey, I’m this. So what? I still live the life of a teenage dream. I can just forget I was a freak and live while I’m young!” But now it is different. I sense that my life is in danger.
Someone wants me ended. The familiar chill ran through my spine as I prepared for school. It was a sunny Friday morning, and everyone began scrambling around the house like eggs in a frying pan.
“Someone get my cell
phone!”
“I’m going, love!”
“Where’s my sheet music?”
“I said the oats are in the CUPBOARD!”
“Sampa, your cell phone
is in your brother’s room.”
“You’re not coming in my room, Sam!”
As always, I was stuffing
books and art supplies in my bag, and listening to video game music in my room,
far from my siblings and parents’ pandemonium in the kitchen. I felt like I had
my own world, a world known only to me and myself only. My three brothers and
sisters, my parents, and friends had their own places…somewhere. Oh, how grand
would it be to actually enter that world with others seeking refuge in their
minds, ones who cannot discern between right and wrong so soon!
I lazily grabbed my backpack and began to saunter out the door with two of my siblings. I have two brothers and one sister. My older brother, Tomen, is a freshman in high school. Sampaguita (we call her Jasmine), the next youngest (after me), is in fifth grade. And my baby brother, Kuko, is still the cute, petite little prince I know most. He stays home with “meema” or so he calls Mom.
Jasmine walked with Tomen after I distantly wave goodbye to them as I enter Willow Creek Intermediate’s black gates. I began to walk to the basketball courts, where my friends and I hang out and gaze at the city in front of us.
Suddenly, the vision enters the ravine.
Nothing around me but the fog that emerges from within, my dress and hair were blowing in the sinister winds. The voice that I knew most, but never knew who it belonged to, echoed in the desolate place in the middle of nowhere.
“You and Ryou have something no other human being possesses,” the voice creeps, “A daring gift, a gift that very few people found in their hearts. Destiny has chosen you two, for both of you have a fiery passion and audacity that no one has. The flame will keep glowering, and will glower forever. Live up to your destiny, child, for the fate depends on you. You are worthy, truly worthy…”
“Wait!” I ask, “What destiny? Why Ryou and me, why is it us, out of everyone else in this world?!”
There is no answer. The wind transitions to a gentle breeze. I was left helpless, having no clue what was going on. Did I ever even know?
Everything faded to black.
“Yuka-chan?! Yuka, wake up!!!”
“Is this her trance again?!”
“Ignore her!”
“Wait, she’s stirring!”
“Huh?!” I open my eyes and blink at the beams of sunlight. I was surrounded by my friends, all of their faces showing awe and for some reason, fear.
After awkward moments of silence, my friends began to chatter all at once. “Whoa…”
“Y-y-y-your eyes…”
“They were glowing aqua green! Why?”
The silence breaks out. One of my friends, Katrina Akumi, mutters quite harshly, “Heck, what’s with you and your crazy trances, hm? Keep it cool, Hito! Now why do you get them "moments"?"
I raise my eyebrows. Huh. What was Katrina looking for from me? I replied, choosing my words carefully, making sure I’m not revealing too much. “Why would you care? Look, guys, I’m not demented or anything. Actually to tell you honestly, I’m trying to find answers to that myself. But let’s just say I’m just being…nostalgic, dare I say it.”
I wave the subject away. Our regular-day conversations begin. I glance at Katrina, who looks glum. Even stranger, she tells us that she has to depart because she forgot to ask her teacher about a math question, which brought more suspicion. Katrina is too smart to ask questions. Besides, the problem she needed help on was so easy! Katrina quickly ran off, talking to Ryou on the way. He glances my way with a cold stare, once again, letting the chilling feeling enter my spine.
What did Ryou have against me anyway?! I mean, seriously, he has problems, giving me those dirty looks and then waving me off in the general public and then act like a total spaz when he’s around me only! Well, the tolerance for my patience was running thin. I don’t want this to form conflicts with each other.
Well, too bad it didn’t go through this time.
The bell rang, causing me to awaken my senses once again. I shook off the remaining questions in my head and join my friends as we giggle all the way to homeroom. Ryou’s cold and stealthy stare still chills me to the bone.
I began to sense that today was no regular Friday at all. What was going to happen to everyone around me? What was going to make this day a day where fate changes? Why would this be?
Will this be the day I finally have the answers revealed… after all this time, for thirteen years, when I’ve been burdened with the question with the answer unbeknownst to me?
You are worthy, truly worthy…
