What Does Fall Mean to You? - Burning Leaves

When I was a young child, holding my mother's guiding hands as we walked down the road, my mother would stop when she smelled burning leaves.

She would always tell me, “This is my favorite part of Fall... I love the smell of burning leaves...”

The smell soon became a memory of her and my childhood. A realization of my innocence and curiosity. I feel it was the same for my mother also, from the days when she attended college in New York. It reminded her of her youth in so many ways.

Now that I have children of my own, I can feel that in me too. That longing to go back to the days when I was a little girl and closing my eyes, remembering the closeness of the relationship I had with my mother. But I realize every time that I now have the task that she once had. To teach and to guide like she did with me.

Now that she is moving away to take care of my ailing grandparents, I hope to instill that same love for Fall in my own children. I want them to know how special they are to me and I will also have them stop and smell the scents of Autumn.
