He fell to his knees in front of her.
“But- I thought you loved me.”
She shook her head doggedly, “I-I had to, it was part of my job.”
“Is that all I am to you?” He whispered harshly, “A mission? A job?” He pulled at her shirt, forcing her to step back as his weight tried to pull her down to the floor.
“Will you get a raise from being with me?” He cried, “WELL, WHY NOT KILL ME?!” He screamed, “I know who you are now.” He pushed her away with disgust, “I bet you could do it too,” He pulled himself to his feet, grabbing her arms.
“Jack - stop.” She murmured, grimacing at his grip.
“STOP WHAT?! You-you bitch.”
She nodded, and his eyes snapped to her face, his boiling rage seething, “WHY DON’T YOU FIGHT BACK?”
“My contract is through, I don’t have to stay anymore.” She took a deep breath, expertly twisting her arms out of his reach and stepping back, “I came to say goodbye.”
“Five years Mez, we were together five years.”
“I know.”
“We bought a house!”
“I know.”
“Why-why-how. What am I going to tell my parents?” He slapped a hand to his forehead, "were yours even real?!" He gave a shuddering breath as his world collapsed around him, "...are you real?" He fell back onto his heels, his eyes filled with tears that streamed down his face.
“I’m sorry.” Megan whispered, “I was to keep tabs on you in case you tried to contact your brother. He’s a major terrorist, and you’re his only next of Kin.”
“You know I have no contact with him! I’M NOT AN IDIOT.”
“I know.”
“And now?”
“We have him, you’re s-no longer needed.”
She walked past him, picking up her suitcase by the door.
“Megan.”
She turned back to look at him, placing the large suitcase in front of her body.
“Did you ever love me? In the five years? Was I- did I mean anything to you?”
She smiled sadly at him, pain bright in her eyes. They were green now, ocean green. Not the light blue contacts she had had for nearly six years. For a moment Jack watched her, watched her short hair curl slightly against her cheek. Saw with new eyes how she moved with a contained grace, as though she was ready for anything. The sweet, clumsy nature she had must have been an act. He found himself both doubting her and falling in love with her all over again.
“Jack," she said, "if I could do this life over. It would be by your side.”
He frowned, processing her words. He looked up from considering, seeing she had slipped out soundlessly.
“She was going to say I was safe now - not no longer needed.” Jack whispered to himself, falling onto his back to the floor. Their cat strolled out of the bedroom and sat near his face, patting his nose with an insistent paw.
“Dinner, Misty?” He asked, “I had made us her favourite curry to celebrate her finishing teaching for the year. I don’t even know if she is a teacher.”
He considered her late nights as she graded papers, her purple glasses perched on her little nose.
“I just don’t know anymore.”
The cat rubbed herself against his cheek, making his nose itch. “I loved her you know.”
“She knows,” A voice said, “that’s why she tried to leave before we could track her.”
Jack looked up, seeing a man smile down at him, a rather aggressive grin stretched across his face.
“You’re here to kill me huh?" Jack asked from the floor, his voice resigned, "Run with the spy movie shtick.”
