Truth be told, I'm not too sure why I opted for the name afterward for either the place or the book. It just sounds kind of dreamy and surreal to me, how the word flows and looks, so that's partly where it came from. One possible interpretation I kind of humored at first was the idea that the afterward was an afterlife of sorts, that the protagonist who wakes up on the beach had died in a previous life, but I never actually went anywhere even adjacent to this notion, so I don't even remotely consider it canon these days.
