Ferrel is aware of all this as he's waking up from surgery. He has just undergone the surgical amputation of his left arm. He couldn't be more relieved.

Ferrel's relief is short lived as everything begins to spiral downward into chaos. Things aren't adding up. He becomes aware of his senses after waking up from his surgery.
