A/N: Not necessarily exactly a fairy tale, but I'm going to try Alice in Wonderland since I'm extremely fond of the story. I was going to do East of the Sun, West of the Moon or Twelve Dancing Princesses or Goose Girl but I decided on Alice in Wonderland. She'd only wanted to relax under that tree and have a nice nap, but that damned rabbit had come. Who wouldn't have followed a talking rabbit for goodness sake? Of course, that was the least of her worries. How had she ended up here? She was stuck in a strange place with no way out. She glanced around, surrounded by trees that seemed to claw at her throat. She pulled her sleeves down to cover her hands and grabbed one of the branches, and began climbing, hoping for a better vantage point. When she broke above the tree line, she surveyed the odd scenery, a forest filled with giant mushrooms and trees that seemed to have a mind of their own. She shuddered and slid down once again.
She continued onward through the forest until she stumbled upon a cocoon that had been forcefully torn open. The butterfly, it's once magnificent wings now torn off and mangled, lay on a mushroom, the carcass slowly decaying. She turned her head away, stomach curling at the putrid smell of rot. She stumbled past the corpse and tripped, falling. Her hand struck something hard, and she picked it up, examining the label. It was a small bottle that read "drink me."
"Why would I ever drink this? It could be poison for all I know," she muttered to herself, setting the bottle back down. She hesitated, then picked it back up and slipped it into her pocket before continuing on. After what seemed like hours, but could have been only minutes, she heard the sound of maniacal laughter in the distance. Stumbling into a clearing, she came across an odd sort of tea party. There was a mangy rabbit that was stumbling across the table, foaming at the mouth and giggling and snorting all the way. The other occupant of this odd tea party was a man with a wide brimmed hat that was pulled all the way down to his forehead. He sat there, sipping tea calmly, and glanced up at her, as if expecting her arrival.
"My dear, would you like to sit and have some tea?" he asked calmly, disregarding the rabbit still dancing about on the table.
"I... suppose. Though I feel as if there's something I have to do," she replied, frowning slightly. The man smiled and pulled out a chair, and she sat down. She pulled out the small bottle and turned it in her hands while staring at the large hat on the man's head.
"Are you curious, my dear? About my hat? Would you like to see what's under it?" he purred.
He whipped it off in a quick motion, revealing that the entire top of his head was nothing but a bloody mess of gore. She cried out, standing up so quickly the chair clattered to the ground. The man laughed hysterically at her reaction and shot toward her, his hand outstretched, lunging for her throat. She scrambled back and grabbed a teacup from the table, hurling it in vain at him. He laughed even harder at this. She ran around to the other side of the table, bottle still in her hand, and quickly uncorked it, dumping the contents into the tea. She snatched up the cup and shoved it at him.
"I'm sorry for intruding," she cried out, on the verge of hysteria. "Please, accept this as an apology." The man without a scalp grinned and grabbed the tea cup, drinking from it greedily. He drained it in a single gulp, then slowly set it down on the table and stumbled back, a hand at his throat.
"What.... did... you... do...?" he gasped, hacking up blood, strings of it hanging from his chin. The rabbit danced around on the table and slammed it's foot into the teacup the man had drained moments ago, the cup shattering under its foot. It continued dancing, now leaving a single bloody footprint wherever it went. She backed up as the man stumbled toward her, a hand held out, as if pleading with her for help. He vomited blood on the ground and then collapsed face down.
She turned from the body and ran. She kept running until she halted and stumbled, coming to a cliff, a river of blood flowing miles below. She stared down, eyes wide, then backed up and took a leap from the edge of the cliff.
She fell down, down, down.
And then her eyes flew open, and she was staring at the buzzing hospital light. She'd failed yet again.
A/N: Annndd... that was bad. Sorry. I tried to Alice in Wonderland but I failed. I'm disappointed in myself (Alice in Wonderland is my favorite classic and my entire childhood). I wanted to make it dark but it's kind of a mess. Oh well, it was still fun to write!
