"Don't be such a woman." He scuffed. My partner was handsome as all get out and he knew it, with a well toned body, short blond hair and a light beard and mustache going on.
"I am so serious right now." I warned, nearing the end of my patience as we stood over the bomb in the evacuated stadium. He silently mimicked me. *snip* The sound of the scissors on his pocket knife seemed to vibrate the cool cement walls around me. "You didn't seriously-"
"Yep."
"You just-" My heart was speeding up further, ringing in my ears as I stared at him as he knelt there nonchalantly. My brain not wanting to comprehend.
"Yep."
"Does this mean..."
"Quite probably." Then we heard a beep and looked down at the bomb to see the countdown speeding up. My heart stopped and we stared at each other before dashing through the curved hall searching for the exit.
"I HATE YOU!" I screamed as we found the entrance just as the bomb detonated and the blast threw us through the opening and onto the asphalt.
Sokol was the first to sit up. "Well that was fun." Frustrated beyond reason I leaned up and socked him in the face. He fell back with a grunt, holding his cheek. Too angry to say words, I stiffly climbed to my feet. I dusted off my cloths, feeling shaky and glanced at my arms to see them all scrapped up. I ignored Sokol's presence for the rest of the day, while we were treated by the paramedics, drove back to the station, got scolded by the captain, and wrote up our reports, which I admit to perhaps taking out my frustration on my keyboard. I felt ready to explode. Sokol was constantly trying to draw me into a conversation in the hopes of me forgiving him, but I completely tuned him out. He was fricken insane! Who tried to disable a bomb themselves? Who? Only my partner. The day was a daze and I found myself at home, fed my dog, and forwent dinner for the comfort of my bed, just wanting that day to all be a nightmare... But the scrapes, bruises, and bone deep soreness was all there in the morning. I groaned, my border collie cuddled against my side. Grunting, I turned my alarm off, my dog shooting off the bed in the hopes I would play with him. Why? I got up and took a stinging shower, already in a bad mood. Dressed for the day, I went to the backyard with my dog and played fetch for a good twenty minutes before I grabbed a bagel, slathering it in cream cheese, filled a thermos with water and headed out the door. I listened to the weather on the radio half-heartedly as I drove to work. I took a breath as I got out of my car to see Sokol waiting for me good-naturedly at the door to the precinct. "Why so reserved Ligia?" I glared. "Aw, come on, you aren't still sore at me are you? We survived, where's the harm." I ignored him and went to walk passed so he switched gears, his tone losing it's cheer. "There was another bombing this morning, this time a regular package bomb to a civilian. It is yet to be confirmed or denied whether the two are connected or not."
I didn't stop for him, but I was listening and furrowed my brows. "That doesn't make sense." I murmured to myself. Why would someone try to bomb a baseball stadium then some random old joe?
"Aw, come on Ligia, stop ignoring me." Sokol complained.
"Stewart, Sokol, with me." The captain said from the open second floor as soon as we walked into the office. I wasn't surprised since we were so involved in the first bombing. Time for a briefing. We jogged up the stairs and the captain led us to a meeting room...where two other people were already waiting. Both older men with brown hair, one graying, one not, and both with beards.
"They're awfully...young...aren't they?" The oldest one said to the captain. Sokol smirked but I didn't respond. The younger brunette considered us with intelligent dark eyes and didn't seem to condemn us based on our lack of experience.
The captain eventually shrugged, "They have the highest solved rate out of anyone in the department, but if you don't want them..." He shrugged again.
The older man sucked on his cheek, "Fine then, we'll try them out. Newbies, this is FBI Agent Krall. You will be working with him on this bombing case." I tightened my hands clasped behind my back and narrowed my eyes. I didn't like this FBI handler's attitude at all. Newbie? And he sure had gall to take over the conversation like that, usurping my own captain. Files were passed around as we sat down and I started going through the pictures of pieces of the bomb. There were also pictures of the bomb Sokol blew up. The two different bombs didn't look similar at all. "The bomb this morning was a pipe bomb in a cardboard box-"
"What makes you think these two are connected?" I interrupted him.
The handler looked shocked he had been interrupted. "Well we don't know one way or the other-"
"But you are proceeding as if they were."
The handler's face started to get red from anger, "Well wouldn't it be great if we catch the suspects whether they are two different people or not?"
"Proceeding as if these two cases are linked will hinder the investigation and possibly lead to a suspect getting away."
"Listen here woman-"
"I wouldn't disrespect my partner if I were you." Sokol said suddenly with a misleading smile.
"Detective Stewart is correct." Krall said, breaking the growing tension in the room as he tossed the file he had been going through back onto the table.
"Wha-"
"Do you know why we should refrain from naming suspects?"
"What does that have to do-"
"It's because we then make conclusions based on the name. We should refrain from making any premature conclusions and that includes lumping these cases together."
The handler was fuming. "But both use the same trigger." He said, desperate to prove his case.
I shifted through the info. That was intriguing. It was the same. "Mercury activated." But with the bombs so different, but the manufacturer the same? Interesting. "You're right, that is intriguing, however I still stand by my belief that these two cases should be pursued by two different teams." However I was having trouble keeping myself from being immersed in both. "The pipe-bomb in the cardboard box...like it was mail. But it couldn't have been sent in the mail with a mercury switch."
"Why do you say that?" The handler asked.
"Because mercury switches are too sensitive. Sending something by mail is too active for a mercury switch, it would have prematurely detonated. The bomber had to be the deliverer." He was probably watching as well...
"It is strange." Sokol put in. "The motives for each case is too different. What case do you want Ligia?" I became lost in thought at his question. I wanted to catch the bastard who almost blew us up. But this pipe bomb case was interesting. And above all, if we had someone making bombs and passing them out like candy to kids, I definitely wanted to bring them down.
"If you want these cases separated so much, take the pipe bomb case. My agent and another team will take the stadium bombing." It was his way of demoting us, but my partner and I didn't care. I smiled and we both stood as one.
"Pleasure meeting your pompous ass." Sokol said with a smile. Our captain looked like he was resigned to go down with his sinking ship.
"What did you say?" The handler said, flabbergasted. With a snicker I push my partner out the door before the handler could blow up, ditching our poor captain to take the heat. Really, our captain was a saint to put up with us. All of the sudden the office we went back to quieted as there was an explosion on the news channel. We all clustered to look as the phones started ringing. It was coverage on the pipe bombing this morning. Another bomb was detonated in the crowd gathering.
"Let's get down there." Sokol agreed with me and we left in my car.
Sokol was on the phone as I drove. He hanged up on his first phone call and let me in on the details. "The second bombing was a neighbor of the first victim. The neighbor is Domitilla Ainsley. 34-years old. Housewife. Dead on scene."
"This doesn't make sense. Bombs are usually for mass murder, not these little sprees. We know anything else?"
"The first victim, Onisimu Lawerenz was a partner in a condo development deal that just went under."
"That could be a motive. But then there's Domitilla. The only connection they have so far is proximity." We arrived at the scene and separated to investigate on our own. I went to Onisimu's case and Sokol investigated the neighbor. I talked to some cops that were originally there and found out the package had been left on Onimisu's front porch. I got on the phone and set in motion a search warrant on Onimisu's home. So far the crime scene was outside, not inside. I wanted to be thorough. In bombing cases, it is actually quite common for the bombers to be one of the victims because of how easy it is to blow yourself up when handling the bomb. It was an hour or so before we could enter Onisimu's home, in the meantime I went over the parts of the bomb that were collected. Wish I knew more about bombs... When we could get ATF into the home, Mrs. Lawerenz was not a happy camper.
"Detectives." An ATF agent came to find us. "We've got something." They led us to the garage, and opened a toolbox. Sokol whistled.
"Damn." I always knew it was a possibility Onisimu could be the bomber....but to actually find some evidence that leaned that way was still surprising. At the bottom of the toolbox was supplies to make a bomb and the book The Anarchist's Companion. "You've got to be kidding me." I looked up at Sokol. "I guess we're going to the hospital." Onisimu had serious injuries, got his leg blown off, but otherwise was very much alive. When we got to the hospital Onisimu was out of surgery and awake. Good. After introductions I started out simple in the questioning. "Can you tell us about the package Mr. Lawerenz."
"I thought I knew what it was. Pot for an orchid. I collect them. I ordered the pot through the mail."
"Why didn't you take it inside?" I asked.
"It was for my office. I was going there anyway. Thought I'd take it with me. That's the last thing I remember."
"A lot of people are angry about your condo deal falling apart, they were angry at you. How did that make you feel?"
"I felt awful. I thought those condos would make a lot of money for a lot of people. Myself included. All those investors that lost their money. The stadium."
"What about the stadium?" Sokol asked.
"Is it the same bomber?" Then he started crying about his feet and we had to leave him alone and get some nurses in there.
"Why didn't you grill him harder?" Sokol asked.
"What's he going to say? Yes I am an Anarchist and I want to blow up the government? But I admit I hoped we had more time with him. Maybe I should have sped things along. But besides that..."
"What?"
"Did he seem like someone so discontent he'd start bombing people?"
"You can tell after just that short talk?"
"Well, he felt bad about the condo deal falling apart. Empathy for the investors. Why would he blow up an investor from the condo fallout?"
"Perhaps there was some other beef between them, they were neighbors."
"True. It'll be interesting to see if the supplies we found match the pipe-bomb used." Sokol's phone rang. As he talked I got a water from the vending machine.
"So, fun fact. The signature on the bomb matches a serial bomber already caught and is in prison." Sokol said as I came back. I groaned. This case just got a whole lot bigger.
"Alright, let's go dig out the old case files on this guy." After doing some research it's clear that the bombs were identical...but the motives were still way different. The manufacturer was big time. Taking out several cops and a hostage when he was finally caught.. Why these little explosions now? But what we also found out was he had a huge fanbase... Copycat. As we were digging we found out that the bombing supplies and manual were from Onisimu's nephew, so our suspicion was moved away from him. At least this case was a little more up our alley than normal bombing cases. This wasn't the typical bomber, this was just a murderer who happened to be using pipe-bombs as their weapon. We were used to going after murderers, not bombers. However, another thing we were sure of, is this person was a huge fan of Hannibal Begbie. "Well, he should be careful. Those things are dangerous." Our questioning of him gave us nothing, and we were interrupted halfway by a prison guard. Something had happened. A child had picked up a box matching the boxes the other pipe-bombs were in. The mother called the police and the bomb squad was able to retrieve and disarm the bomb. At least now that Hannibal knew there was someone copying him, he might try to reach out, and when he does we'll be monitoring him to follow the trail. In the meantime we were stuck going through all his fan-mail and digging further in the victims. We got lucky, it wasn't long until Hannibal reached out to his fans. The internet is a scary place. Even with limited access, he was able to find a bomb enthusiast website. That's were he posted a warning the cops were gunning for them. We went through all the visitors to that sight. And there was one that stood out based on what we knew about the victims... One had previous dealings with Domitilla Ainsley. When we went to pick him up, he ran, almost running us over with his old car. In his garage we found all his tools and articles on Hannibal Begbie. We went back through any interaction between our perp and Hannibal.
