Thought I should update this blog. I was planning on discussing genres and Second Person, but then me and Jellykat recently had a small discussion on writing in SP. I gave her two tips: don't overuse the word 'you' and think about who the narrator is.845Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ4w3jO01EhZ
This is very important, especially for second person. With first person, it's easy: the narrator is the protagonist. With third person, unless specifically stated otherwise, is this invisible, mind-reading record keeper. Second person, because it's a narration that is so rarely used, doesn't appear to have a predominant 'narrator-being'.
And that's where things get fun.
Why? Because SPN can be almost anyone! It can be a separate person, a personification of the subconscious, the Jungian Shadow, even the author!
Personally, I write from the subconscious, something I know that I can only really do with SP (and TP Personal, as well). Unless I'm writing out an extremely aware protagonist, I can't execute this in FP, because I can only describe their conscious thoughts and feelings with First. This might just be part of my style, but I know that people can think in two ways. The first is our conscious thoughts, an audible voice in our heads. The second is our subconscious, images, memories, and feelings that we don't - or can't - always put into words! Done well and SP can intimately show a parson to readers, sometimes to the point where it can be scary, I'm sure.
That is my goal.
