Twenty-Six Years Ago40Please respect copyright.PENANAwjGNuQ2qpd
For me, there was nothing but a seemingly everlasting comfortable darkness. I had everything I needed within the shell of my egg. My twin was next to me, and as often as possible, our mother was constantly near, always talking to us with her soothing tone. Though, the way she talked to us, she did not know there was two of us within the egg. It will be a lovely surprise when we finally emerge from the darkness.40Please respect copyright.PENANAsiL5b8qOuZ
Our mother was in the midst of singing us a lullaby. I was not familiar with all the words to it. Mother had told us it was an elven song. From what words I could pick out, the song was about an Elven king, and his descent to something I did not know. Next to me, my twin shifted, a small wing pushing through the thick fluid that sustained our lives within the egg, curling it around me. We cuddled, reveling in the peace around us.
However, as all things must come to an end, as did this pleasant moment. An explosion of some sort shook the ground upon which our egg sat, and our mother's singing came to an abrupt end. Terror like I've never felt before rocked me, and through whatever connection bound me to my twin, I could tell he was equally as terrified as I. We clutched each other tightly.
"The elves," a male's voice could be heard. I recognized it as our father. He did not come as often as mother did. "They come with the Denari and the Humans at their backs. We cannot keep them away from much longer, Galira. You must take our egg and leave with the other mothers." I wondered how could father say such a thing. We were dragons! How could any mortal ever hope to contend with us? We should not be running. We should be crushing the mortals who stood against us with our might and our magic.
"There is no where else to go! We must stand and fight. Their arrogance will only grow if they see us fleeing!" At least mother was the one with reason, as expected.
"There is everywhere to go, as long as you and our child are away from these monsters. They are going even so far as to smashing the eggs." An audible gasp was heard from our mother.
"And what of you, then, if we must truly leave? You would have our child without a father?"
"I cannot leave, and you know this," my father replied, his voice cracking. A distasteful sign of weakness.
"Our race is on the verge of extinction. Orders can go to hellfire," my mother spat. Extinction was a word I was not familiar with. What did it mean? It didn't sound good though. My twin agreed.
"If I leave, then we will surely fall. They need a commander."
My mother huffed. She came closer, a lightly scraping could be heard as she wrapped her talons around our egg, lifting us. She cradled us closer to her chest. Was she bowing so easily to father's command? I was disappointed. My twin reached to me through our connections. We are helpless to stop any who would smash our egg. You know this, brother. This is the smart move.
A cowardly one at best, I replied.
"I will leave, only to save our child. I hope you come to your senses and leave as well," my mother snarled at him. Their egg was abruptly jolted as mother leapt into the air, the sound of flapping wings drowning out everything else except the distant screams of dragons.40Please respect copyright.PENANAx7aL7annkU
Each beat of mother's wing was another round of disappointment. We left our home to the mortals. We were a disgrace to dragonkind. The following sounds of explosions and the roars of dragons became more and more distant, until they could be heard no more.
