Madeleine doesn't seem to get it though. Beautiful girl, she's usually so clever. You'd think once someone learns how awful a person is, they would be glad to see them dead. Why should it matter if it was her mother? Shouldn't that have made her offenses even more worth punishing?
Take her father for example, he was always a little too close to Maddy for my liking. All the hair stroking and shoulder massaging was enough to make it clear to anyone that he had a lot more in mind that just a father-daughter relationship. I hated him even more than his good-for-nothing wife. Madeleine was mine! How dare he touch her like that; pray on her like she were some fresh, juicy peach ripe for the picking. She was mine and no one, not even him, was going to keep her from me.
She ran away from me the night I drowned her father in front of her. I was just trying to make him apologize. That man with his stubbornness and pride; he tried to convince Maddy that I was lying to her! I will admit, I got a little carried away. But the fucker just kept talking, he didn't deserve to talk anymore.
Maddy is a very fast runner, she was on the track team at her school. I used to go to all of her meets and watch her win medals. But what Maddy didn't understand was that I was faster than her; faster, stronger, smarter. I had to be, I couldn't let her escape. I needed her! I needed her lips to breathe life into me, her hands to soften me, her eyes to look deeply into mine and pull out whatever emotions she claimed to see. I loved when she gave me depth; how she insisted that deep down there was someone in me she could relate to.
I would just smile and listen to her childlike fairy tales about the person she believed I was. I wish she could tell me another story. I wish I could hear her voice again.
"Oh Madeleine, why couldn't you just listen to me?"
I whispered down to the lifeless body that once housed my dear girl. My beautiful girl; beautiful on the inside and out. I knew that was true now. For, no one's blood had ever sparkled quite as brilliantly in the moonlight as hers.
