Chapter Six

The rest of the day went by in a blur. After archery, it was lunch time, so all four teams met outside on the patch of grass just beside the house. There were many logs set out for us to sit on, and Ben was at the grill, grilling up hotdogs for everyone. Once they were ready we queued up and when we got it we were asked if we wanted onions, ketchup and/or mustard. I go for onions and ketchup. Next there was Sally giving out a cup of lemonade for everyone. Then everyone sat on a log. I sat with Megan, Aaron and Alex. Dan is sitting with people I do not know, he is on the other side of the area from me, but somehow I lock eyes with him. He smiles at me, a full out mocking one, then looks at me up and down and smirkes. My cheeks feel hot and I turn my attention to my boots. Everyone around me laughs at a joke Megan says, I look at them and fake smile as if I too heard and got the said joke.
Once that was done we met up with Finn again, and this time he takes us down the same path we had went on when going to our first activity, only we go down deeper, to a path that is sheltered by tall trees. So much so that there is only little rays of sunlight shining, so it is much cooler down here. We follow Finn over to three shops that were made out of wood, with paint. It looks like something out of an old western movie set. One of them is a barbers shop, one is a bar and the last is a jail. All of the windows and little details were painted on, each has a functioning door. Finn leads us through the bar, and we are met with a deck that has a barrier running along it at the right height for us to lean over. Looking over at the other side there is another barrier that someone has put glass bottles and different plastic objects on.
“Right everyone,” Finn says, he is standing with his back to the barrier, looking at everyone, “we are going to practice shooting, with a fake gun and fake bullets of course.” He then reaches down to the bag he brought with him, and passed one to everyone along with 5 fake bullets. “As I said the bullets are fake, but if one hits you it will hurt, so everyone line up in front of this,” he puts his hands on the barrier to tell us where to go. “Do not walk in front of each other, if you are shooting pay full attention to it. But mainly, have fun or at least try. Ok?” He pushes himself off of the barrier, and everyone lines up against the barrier. Finn then tells us how to load a gun and how to hold it, and how to shoot it.
“So, how good are you at shooting?” I ask Alex beside me.
“I guess I’m ok, shooting a gun never really interested me.” He does not meet my eyes as he loads his gun.
“How come?” I ask him seriously.
“Lets just say I dislike violence.” He forces a smile. Then turns around and lines up his gun at a glass bottle, and misses.
I didn’t do much better than him, what I would try to aim for, I would miss completely. After we were told we were done today, and that tomorrow we would do horse riding and canoeing, as what we done today was aiming practice, and tomorrow will be balance practice.

It’s later, dinners done, and me and Megan are sitting at the bench next to the staircase. Everyone else is doing what they want to do for the next couple of hours, until 11 for lights out.
“Come on, you have to agree he’s at least cute.” Meagan is talking about the boy with the blue hair that is in our group, I still have not had the chance to talk to him. But him and Meagan have been talking throughout the day.
“I mean, I guess, but he’s not really my type.”
“Sorry, I forgot that country boys with a dark past is your type.” She says with smile. Wait dark past?
“What do you mean? Dark past?”
“You don’t know?” She asks, all joking gone from her voice and face.
“Know what?” I ask, with a pressing need to know.
“Well, I don’t know all of the details, but I’ve heard what they all say,” she has dropped into a slow and quiet whisper, “from what I understand is that Alex’s dad is a dick, he and his mum were never a couple, but went together one night at a party, and bam, she got pregnant. From the start of the pregnancy, he made it very clear he wanted no part of it, until Alex was born and then wanted to raise him by himself without Isabel, and ‘this damn farm, you call a home’ he said, and since Isabel has done everything she could to get him as far from her and Alex as was humanly possible. He didn’t like that of course, so she moved herself and Alex into here when Alex was only 1. I know that is the basics, but not much else.” A sad expression grows on her face.
Holy fuck! “That’s horrible.” I feel tears come into my eyes, but I push them back down.
“Wait,” she jerks her head up to me, “you can’t tell Alex that I told you, and don’t act any different around him, if you and him get to know each other better than he will most likely tell you himself. Which is also unlikely as he has never been in a relationship with anyone as he pushes them away.” She talks very fast, when a figure appears behind her.
“Hi.” A boy walks forward, and it’s that boy with the blue hair, he looks at Megan, “Good to see you again.” He smiles, it’s different to Alex’s, where Alex’s is warm and welcoming, his is more of a sure of himself one. “I don’t think we’ve met, I’m Johnny.” He holds his hand out to me, I learn forward and shake his hand.
“Hi, I’m Lily, I think you know my brother, Aaron.”
His smile grows slowly, as he seems to know exactly who I am. “Yep, both him and Alex have talked about you now and then.” He takes a step back. “Curfew is in a bit, and I was wondering,” he puts all of his attention to Megan, who appears to be lost in him, “do you wanna go for a walk? Maybe?” He asks her.
She jerks back to life, “Yeah.” She says softly, and stands then follows him out the door that leads to the back of the house.
‘Bye guys.’ I decide to go up to my room, and read one of the books I brought with me.

When I open the door to the room there are some girls who are sitting in a circle with a plastic bottle in the middle of them. When the door closes they turn to look at me, then one of the girl’s says to me. “Your Lily, right?” I nod, “Come over here and join us, we are playing truth or truth, we would do dares too, but it’s a bit late.” She laughs a little.
“Ok.” I go over to them and they make room for me. There are about six of us here. When I join them one of the girls lean forward and spins the bottle.
It lands on the person next to me, the girl who spun the bottle says, “Ok,” she smiles a little, then thinks what she could ask her, “Which was the most embarrassing moment of your life?” She asks, the girl then goes on to talk about a time when she really liked this boy, and she went up and kissed him, then he said that he didn’t like girls.
Someone else goes, and they talk about their biggest fear, which was ending up alone. Then more people go until it comes to my turn to spin the bottle, I lean forward and spin it, it lands on a girl with light brown hair with some highlights through it.
I think what to ask her, “If you woke up as the opposite gender, what would you do?” Some of the girls mutter, ‘good one’.
The girl I ask thinks, “I would probably play video games, and I wouldn’t get judged for it, or picked on in game, because I’m a girl.” Everyone claps for her, and she smiles.
After the next couple of times, the bottle lands on me, I look to who is asking me something and it’s the girl who invited me over. She looks at me and asks, “What would you never do in your life?”
“I would never walk away or leave my family or someone I care about, if they ever need anyone I will be there for them.” All of the girls aww. We only do two more rounds until it’s curfew, everyone moves into motion by getting their pjs on and brushing their teeth.
Megan still was not back half an hour later so I pull out my book and a little light I brought incase I couldn’t sleep, but in this case I am waiting for my friend to come back. She enters the dark room as softly as possible, and when she sees that I am still up she smiles and then passes out on her bed.
