Poetry Contest. - I am old and I am young

Parts of me are growing old

Eyelids withered, fingers cold,

Achy joints and creaky bones,

In all I’ve ever known

Parts of me are ever-young,

A sunburnt face against a heavy sun,

A headache from way too much sugar at once,

A cramp in my side from an overzealous run.

Trying to take on too much.

The old parts are wiser, they know:

True smiles bring to our eyes and nose crinkles,

And sunnier days bring heavier wrinkles

Every person deserves another chance for wrongdoing,

But you must limit the chances you give, and keep moving

The young parts are ambitious and rash:

I find myself outworking the hours of the sun,

Until my ears are ringing and my pulse is light

I'm worried about what future is to come,

I'm fearful that I can do nothing right

And the older parts, they rest,

They confide and they console,

They take not one day for granted,

They dwindle and they dawdle,

They take up all their time,

And they appreciate the little things

That come from being alive.

But the younger parts, they dance,

They fluctuate, dig out new paths,

They seek and they find,

Wistful and impatient to rise.

And these parts overwork,

They know failure against fate,

They don't know what they want

The old parts are proud,

And wise to a fault

They see shades of mercy

Where the others do not

The younger parts are humble,

And know little to none

Hungry for learning

Scared still to love

I am old and I am young

Sometimes wise and sometimes dumb

Though I've had my share of fright and fight

I know there's likely more to come

I am trying to find a less hazy line

Of when to be selfish and when to be kind

I am living in phases of life all at once

I can see myself growing, becoming more soft

And the older I get, the more I feel young-

With no in-betweens, I tiptoe or I run

I am tired and restless, unbound yet unfree

I'm confused and confusing simultaneously

I have old dreams to sack and new dreams to rebuild

I collect my failures and accept defeat,

I’m not sure where I’m going

I am old and I am young

Living out phases of life all at once

Growing and changing, always creating

Sometimes the genius, often the dunce.

But this way I find peace,

And I always take the chance.

For when my younger parts find rest,

The older parts, they dance.
