I was the project manager at a robot construction site in the year of 2078. People in that era no longer live in buildings but cyber-cubicles. Gigantic robots with residential mobile blocks had replaced most of the skyscrapers. I was in charge of the Angel Gundam project, a 30-year project that aims to build the most powerful Gundam to protect our city from natural disasters.
It had been the twenty-ninth year since the project execution. My crew and I spent most of our time at the construction site throughout the years designing and configuring the components and functionalities of the Gundam. We were finally left with the last step - implementing sixteen winglets and four stabilizers on its back to enhance air-traveling efficiency.
My earliest crew members and I started the project when we were in our early twenties. Of course many new members joined us as time went by, but I was glad that all the founding members managed to stick around in this painstaking journey. The Angel Gundam project was our life's task.
Before installing the air-traveling components to the mobile suit, our crew had to conduct a feasibility check to make sure everything was working fine. Halfway through the inspection, I heard a voice shouting from behind.
"It's not going to work! No hope! It's not going to work!" It was Eddie, the most experienced senior robot analyst.
"We need to abandon the project immediately!" He continued.
"Why! What is wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing is wrong in particular. This machine is not needed anymore. We need to dispose of it to the landfills now." Eddie replied.
"I need a reason! What's going on?" I bellowed.
"As I said, nothing is wrong. But this machine is no longer needed. We need to scrap it into pieces and dispose of it. That's the mayor's order."
All of a sudden, the siren in our work station wailed. Beams of scarlet red light filled the whole room. My heart sank. Everything in front of my eyes turned blurry. I was frustrated and couldn't react to what had just happened.
My crew and I committed twenty-nine years on this project but it vanished in just one instant. We built hope together but now hope had scattered into pieces of emptiness. Each one became an isolated island floating randomly in the ocean. Everything, not just Angel Gundam, will be lost.
I was awakened by fear. I stared at the ceiling for almost 10 minutes thinking about my dream.
I fear because what happened feels like life.
