I've got this weird habit. It isn't something people really notice, and honestly, it usually comes in handy. Unlike biting finger nails or twiddling thumbs, this habit is unnoticeable and, quite frankly, preferable. However, it's strange for me to do it so unintentionally; thus, it's a habit.
I enjoy music, and I always have. Being able to lose yourself in a rhythm is like putting the rest of the world on pause, a rare moment of bliss. For me, that's music. And due to needing and wanting the world at a standstill when I listen to the rise and fall of the heartbeat of a song, I need silence. An uncommon jewel in this society. So, one would simply assume that I listen to my music loud, which I do, and with both of my earphones in their rightful spots: My ears.
Yet, you don't find me doing so. Not anymore. Not after this habit.
After you asked to listen to my music that one tiring Monday morning, the awkwardness of listening to the song side by side, and then the steady and comforting realization that you were enjoying it, I started pulling out my left earphone without even understanding what I was doing. So of course you'd notice I'd have a missing earphone, and it'd be dumb if you didn't ask to listen to my music with me. Isn't it strange how something so simple created such a bonded habit?
Now, my constant is my right earphone. Silly? Perhaps. Of course, neither of us have ever been serious people. You're always too smily, and I'm always a little too sarcastic. A bad combination from the start, if you ask me, but I don't regret letting that awkward moment pass between us the first time you listen to my music with me, though. There will never be regrets in that.
Truthfully speaking, it's an almost hopeful thought, listening to music with one headphone, hoping someone will fill the empty space I've so generously offered. It brings me back to that tiring Monday. A few have told me jokingly to cut the left earphone off, since I never really use it, but where would be the fun in that? Having both provides the wistful memories. It lets me wish for you to somehow appear next to me, like a gentle autumn breeze and listen; simply, listen.
I know you can't ever come back, but it's out of habit.
