人人都說，城裡有位翩翩公子手執五彩筆作畫，所繪之物栩栩如生。相傳他家母親討厭看見他作畫，逼他考科舉。於是他為了母親，放下自己所喜愛、甚至因此出名的五彩筆，專心科舉，自此臉上再沒有笑容。

不久後聽聞他名列探花，卻在任官前一天自盡。

他身周散了滿地書籍，手裡緊緊竄著那枝五彩筆。刀尖直戳心窩，死不闔眼。甚至還有傳言，說他身上那把剪刀，是他母親最愛用的。

葬禮當天，他的母親失聲痛哭，不斷在兒子靈前懺悔，若是她沒有逼他考科舉，也許還日日都見得到他的笑容，也許還能看著他娶親生子。

可是一切都來不及了。

蓋棺前，據說他的眼都還沒闔上。
