I ran through the huge house, checking my phone. The clock read 6:44 am and I knew that Trey and Helene would be waiting for me in the car. I had wanted to get to school early to meet the new girl who was supposedly the great-granddaughter of Mr. Alcocer.

After all, as my father said, if I wanted to be a good leader, I had to learn when to accept strays into the family. From what I'd heard though, I don't think I wanted her in my pack. Joining them, I revved up the car and pulled out of the highway. Helene had called shotgun and seemed to beat Trey up in the process of claiming the seat, too. Helene wore a long sleeved dress that fell to her mid-thigh. Black boots coming up to her ankle accompanied it as well as bracelets and make up. Helene was beautiful in her own way though. Her hair was a rich shade of mahogany. It flowed in waves to adorn her glowing, porcelain-like skin. Her eyes, framed by long lashes, were the shade of dark chocolate. A straight yet slightly pointed nose and pretty pink lips, she definitely made heads turn. Though, I guess that all wolves had a certain air of beauty about them. I'd learned that from a young age. However, this applied more so to the females of each pack. Lupi females as a rule were sophisticated, elegant and completely aware of their own seductive powers. They usually exuded the sort of confidence that bordered on arrogance and saw no benefit in underestimating their own worth. It was obvious that the new girl was also wolf but I was very curious as to what she would be like. She'd grown up without a pack, training, or grooming to become somebody's mate. We were halfway to the school when I pulled out of my thoughts by Trey's words. "Hey, Max, isn't that the new chick everyone is talking about? I didn't know she had a kid."

He sounded surprised but I could already see the gears working in his head. Trey was the school's "detective". He could find out practically anything about almost anyone and because of this no one wanted to get on his bad side. Still, though, I slowed down to catch a glimpse of her. Sure enough, she held the hand of a little girl who couldn't be any older than 3. I only saw pretty full lips and dark brown hair that fell in curls down her back. Then she disappeared into the daycare with the child and I continued my drive. I was stunned by how interested I was in her just from one look. What intrigued me was that she stood like she owned the world and nobody could take that from her. When we finally pulled up into the parking lot of our high school, Helene and Trey had already started talking about whether or not she lived with an abusive boyfriend. I sighed and got out of the car, not wanting to listen to their idiocy. She finally pulled into the parking lot, an old and faded black SUV signaling her arrival. She stepped out and made her way around the car, pulling out a black and red book bag, along with an AP Calculus textbook. When she finally noticed me staring, she visibly made sure that I knew she was ignoring me. Of course, I wasn't having that and made my way over to her, Helene and Trey trailing behind. When I was close enough, I settled my hand on her shoulder only to be slapped in the face.

It was almost like time stopped for a minute. I'd never been hit by anyone other than my father and I wasn't the only one who was surprised. Everyone else stopped talking and just stared, dumbfounded. I touched my cheek, not knowing what to say to her. I suppose I didn't need to say something anyway, as my soon-to-be beta, Bash, spoke for me.

"Yes, as a matter of fact I do know who he is. I know that he's a guy, and what's worse? He's one of the others. You all are, which just makes things even worse." I was impressed on how she stood her ground against someone like Bash.

She gave me one last glare, completely ignoring the tall guy in front of her before storming off. While she disappeared behind the school doors, all I could think about were her eyes. Those sad and guarded grey eyes.

I nodded my head, not fully paying to my friend as we made our through the school hallways as well. I couldn't shake the cold feeling I got while looking into her eyes. The way her eyes flickered with terror when she said the word guy, as though she was more scared of a human than a wolf. Maybe I was overthinking things but I could tell that something--no, someone--had made those eyes, those beautiful grey eyes, guarded and weary of the opposite sex.

It turned out that the new girl was in my English class even though I'm pretty sure she was a Junior. I also found out that the new girl's name was Enya. She looked absolutely terrified when I walked through the door,and the worst part of the whole thing? She sat right across from me.

Mrs. Ryder, our English teacher, had our desks shaped in a U-shaped classroom. This was because she loved having debates and I guess, that's what we were having today. Mentally patting myself on the back when she announced it, I sat back and watched as the other classmates, shyly began to debate.

I was ignoring the whole thing until Enya stepped into the middle of the debate circle with a glint in her eyes. We had fallen into the topic of "The human mind" and I suppose she finally wanted to say something to add to the discussion.

"Human condition is our existence, how we see things, what we do, etc, etc. This influences how the mind works. Kind of like how, if you grew up with everything handed to you on a silver platter, you think you have the right to just do whatever you want. Those minds are the corrupted kind, are they not?"

She kept her eyes trained on me, never breaking in the slightest when I met her with an indifferent gaze. She was challenging me with her eyes and I couldn't help but think of how cute she was when they lit up. I stood up, taking on her challenge with a small grin. From the look on my face I was sure that no one would be interrupting us any time soon.

"Oh? Kind of like how if you think it's okay, you're allowed to slap people across the face? Wow, the human mind is something else, don't you think?" I retorted, congratulating myself when I saw the blush that adorned her face.

"Why is it that every male has almost the exact same thought process? Maybe the every person thinks differently from the rest but as a whole, guys just think they have the right to take what they want and pillage."

"Why do you believe that? Do tell."

It made her go silent. The fiery eyes disappeared and it was almost as though they had never been there in the first place, being replaced with fear and sadness. I had the intense need to go and hug her, close off the world and whisper in her ear that everything was okay. Before I could that, though, the bell rang and she ran to pick up her materials and bag.

Making her way to the door she stopped, letting the other kids leave and just stared at me for what felt like hours. Then suddenly her eyes hardened, she turned her back to me and fled from the room. I was in the room alone, worried about Enya and horrified of the onslaught of feelings that had seemed to pull me under with no indication of letting go.
