The bats would spread throughout the complex and eventually go outside devouring everyone in their path. The next stage of their plan was underway as Tom and Charlie rushed to ascend the stairwell which fortunately was free of guards. At the top of the stairs they moved down a hallway to a door and Tom made sure Charlie was ready. She wiped a smear of blood from her forehead. Blood had stained her blonde hair as well. “Okay.”
Tom swung the door open and rushed into an empty room. He lowered his gun, assuming the warden wasn’t there, but then he was grabbed by a man hiding behind the door. The Warden pressed his handgun to Tom’s head in a hostage manner and turned towards Charlie. He yelled at her. “Step back or I’ll—”
Charlie shot him right between the eyes. Blood and brains splattered the wall and some got on Thomas, who heaved with fright as the warden tumbled to the floor. “What the fuck Charlie! You nearly killed me.”
She paced over to the warden’s desk and collected the keys to the armoury. “But I didn’t. Take these, go do your job.” As Tom took the keys back down stairs Charlie glanced out the window at the bus waiting at the bottom of the road and pressed the button on her radio. “Jodie, you are clear to move up.”
Jodie’s voice crackled in reply. “Got it. Don’t let them get to close, you hear? Good hunting up there.”
Four towers surrounded the prison. Charlie unslung her Barret M82 and moved to the catwalk outside the window, eyeing the guard in the south-east tower. She used the railing to balance her weapon as she looked through the sights, centring the crosshairs on the guard, then flicked off the safety, took a breath, and fired.
She moved on to the guard in the next tower.
