She finished putting the last of the clips in her hair – she had chosen butterflies today – and checked her reflection in the mirror one last time before she headed out to the taxi she had arranged to pick her up. She rattled off the address to the prison absent mindedly as she buckled her seat belt and fiddled with the bag she placed on the seat beside her. As they drove she pictured her upcoming visit. Would he be sitting in his cell waiting for her to arrive? Was he excited, nervous, anxious? She’d often wondered what he thought of her but he’d never turned down her visits so she figured he must enjoy them at least a little.
As the car pulled up to the prison she let out a nervous breath, handing over the money before getting out of the car and heading into the main reception area. The receptionist smiled a sad smile at her, just as she always did but the girl with the butterflies merely smiled back as she walked up to the desk. Most of the paperwork was already completed in anticipation of her visit as the staff at the prison were, by now, familiar with her and her regular visiting schedule. All she had to do was sign the visitors’ sheet before a guard led her into the next room. She knew the drill by now and so took the book out of her bag before handing the bag over to the guard who did a quick check inside before placing it in the storage locker. The guard also checked her book by quickly flipping through the pages before placing it on the table. She spread her arms and legs as the guard proceed to pat her down. She took her seat and waited for them to bring him out. She was nervous today. She hadn’t been this nervous since the first time she visited him. She remembered that day, his shocked face at having a visitor after all this time. She’d never introduced herself, scared he’d realise who she was and he had made no effort to introduce himself either, not that it mattered. She knew exactly who he was. She knew what he’d done, but it didn’t bother her. His warm smile and childish grin made it hard to. She thought that today was as good a day as any. “Mister,” she breathed it out as a sigh as they both sat down, “Mister Matthews.” She smiled at the shock that passed through him. “I think it’s about time I introduced myself.” She continued, “My name is Kiera.” A brief flash of recognition passed over his features at the mention of her name. She arrived home to find her adoptive mother pacing the floor.
