I broke up with my boyfriend last night/today.
What? Boyfriend? I hear you ask. But I thought you were asexual???
I am! Sexuality is not the same thing as romantic attraction! While I may not envision sleeping with anyone, having a husband and a family (most likely adopted) is something I've wanted since I was a little girl! I'm a hetero-romantic asexual, meaning I experience romantic feelings for the opposite sex, but don't have sexual feelings for anyone.
It can be an interesting experience. Especially figuring out how to tell your romantic partner you don't have sex. Fortunately, my previous boyfriend (now simply one of my best friends; it was a friendly break-up,) was fine with it. But what about the next one? Or the one after that? You never know, especially since not many people know about asexuals outside of asexual reproduction in biology.
Back to my point, however. Being an asexual does not mean that I cannot love anyone, it simply means I don't make love with anyone. I'll close with one of my favorite asexual defenses:
If sex without love can exist, why can't there be love without sex?
