The Kane Legacy: Ember - Chapter 1

My hands laced with the ladder’s rings as I looked down to spot Milo still clinging to the bars like his life depended on it. He was only a few feet off the ground. The sight ignited a laugh to escape my lips and fill the roadside air. Milo’s deep blue ocean eyes snapped up to meet me. A smile creased across my face.

“No!” Milo shouted back. I couldn't help but roll my eyes.

“We’ve been up this billboard how many times now? And you’re still afraid of heights?”

“Very true. Well, I guess I’ll just have to go it alone then.” And I continued climbing. It didn't take long to reach the top, and when I did I gazed down to check if Milo had built the courage to continue. He had. He wasn't even halfway up the ladder, but he was going. That's all that mattered.

I tore my eyes from the sight and lifted the backpack up from my shoulders before plopping or beside me on the platform. I dug through its contents, my smile being nurtured by the sight of spray cans, masks, and the giant canvas of billboard before me. Taking a spraycan from the bag and a mask to filter out the noxious fumes, I stared up at the billboard, chewing my lip.

I'd thought about the message I would send for the past day and I still had trouble with it. But, instead of pacing the platform and sorting out what exactly I should say, I gripped the spraycan tight in my palm and slipped the mask on over my face. I started into the message, not caring about anything else but the humiliation Sammy would feel when he saw such a sight. It brought a grin to my lips. 525Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡBAGLeYYKaY

The final touches were added. Milo looked over at me with wide eyes.

“What?” I asked, shrugging and laughing before throwing the spraycan back into my backpack. “You have something wrong with it, scaredy cat?” Milo shook his head.

“You're the one that suggested it.”

“Yeah,” Milo threw the backpack over onto his shoulders, making sure not to look down at the ground thirty feet below, “but I never imagined you'd actually do it.”525Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ8jdq3gS8tT

“C’mon, Milo,” I rolled my eyes, “we’ve known each other for how long and you still haven't figured out just how crazy I can be?”

“When, exactly?”

“Just now.” I rolled my eyes again. Milo caught the ground below with his gaze and immediately his arms froze against his sides and he groaned. “Why'd you drag me up here anyways?”525Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ5PyNUqr1SM

“Why not?” I laughed with a little more mischief than I'd expected before taking a step down onto the ladder.

Sirens wailed down below, only shrouded by the thick trees. I swore before quickening my pace down the ladder. Milo had the look of a deer in the headlights. 525Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡjGRPlYUPUO

“Well?” I called up to him, halfway down the ladder myself. “What are you standing around for, Milo? Move!” That spurred him to action and he soon was nearly at my height in the ladder himself. Milo wasn't like me. He had a lot more on the line if he got caught vandalizing public property than me. And he cared a lot more than me, too.

Soon we reached the ground and as soon as my feet touched the pavement of the parking lot below the billboard, I started into a sprint for the rust bucket I called a car. Milo was at my heels, and for a second the thought that we would get away, that Milo might get away, silenced my worries. Hey, this is the author here. I'm most likely going to add more to this once I finish chapter 2 and just merge chapters 1 and 2 together to make one larger chapter. For now, though, here's chapter 1. I hope you enjoyed! (Even with my mistakes which I know I most certainly made) :)
