Chapter 2: Just forget about me.
It was five weeks after Takashi had passed away. The rain poured down on Yūutsu's window. From outside the storm raged on without any intention of stopping soon. But from the inside of his room all that could be heard was the muffled sound of raindrops. He sat in the corner of his room with his legs crossed, and his head drooping down. He was delirious, dazed, and only half there. It looked as if he was so far away he could never be reached again.
His body looked extremely thin, probably because ever since the incident happened he didn't have enough strength to eat or really even sleep. His eyes had bags under them and sleep deprivation made him very weak. The happy boy that loved his family and loved playing outside with his brother was like a completely different person as he sat in his dark room. He looked so fragile and small, like if you tried to move him he would break.
Yūutsu's parents were finally feeling better enough to go back to work. His dad was a lawyer and his mom had a job at the bakery down the road. The only other person in the house at the time was his sister, Murasaki. She was in her room talking to her friend on the phone. Even though she looked very strong on the outside, she was actually very sad on the inside. She loved her older brother very much and was devastated to see him go. But she realized that her family had to live on, it was what Takashi would have wanted. So, she had to be strong and help her family get their strength back.
Murasaki wasn't all alone though, she had her mom and her dad, and she had her friends, too. She was a very popular girl in high school; she had lots of caring friends to help her find the will to live on. So, it is thanks to them that everything is getting better. Little did she know that her younger brother was plotting his own death in the room across the hall.
Yūutsu sat there thinking about how much he missed his brother. I can't go on like this; life just isn't worth living without him. I can't do it anymore. What point is there in pretending to be happy all the time? I miss Takashi, I miss him so much. He was the only one who understood me. I need to end my suffering now. Then the boy, with all his strength, managed to bring himself to his feet. He walked over to his dresser drawer and pulled out a knife.
With shaking hands he brings the knife up to his wrist and takes a deep breath. This is the right thing to do. It has to be. It is the only way out of this hell. I hate my life. I hate it. I HATE IT! He screams those thoughts in his mind. And then he takes the knife and begins to cut in a downward motion into the major artery on his wrist. He tries to keep a steady breath, but the pain is too much. This is what I have to do. I can't go on anymore. He thinks to himself attempting to bring his mind to another place other than the pain. But, it is too much for him and he finally succumbs to the torture and releases an agonizing scream.
Murasaki is still talking on the phone when she thinks she hears someone scream.
"Huh?! What was that?" she says confused. "Hang on a sec, Chihiro. I have to go check on my brother."
"What, aww come on I'm sure he is just fine. Let's talk about how cute Sorata looked in his new uniform today." Says the dense girl over the phone.
"Ummm, I don't know. I am pretty worried; he has been acting really strange lately." Then just as she was about to surrender to her friends pestering, she hears another scream. This one is obviously coming from Yūutsu's room. Murasaki doesn't even think twice as she drops the phone on the floor and runs out of her room. Running down the hall seems to take forever, but eventually she reaches Yūutsu's door and tries to open it. But to no avail, it is locked.
"Yūutsu! Come on! Open the door!" She shouts. But her words don't reach the boy who is slowly, but surely, slipping away from everything.
From the inside of his room Yūutsu is trying to be strong and silence his screams. Though, some still manage to pierce the air and make their way to the girl standing outside his doorway. Yūutsu doesn't have much time left, and he is clearly aware of this fact. Though, he still continues to cut into his wrist with all his strength.
"Please Yūutsu! I'm begging you, open the door! Stop doing whatever you are doing to hurt yourself! Come out here and talk to me!" Yells the girl as she breaks into tears.
Though she continues to yell with all her might, she comes to the realization that he is not going to open this door ever again. She then goes into panic mode as she doesn't here anymore screaming, or any shallow breathing.
"Oh my god! Yūutsu! Please, please! Stop! Oh no, what do I do?!" She says as she looks around for anything that could break his door down. "Somebody please help! Help me, help him!" she shouts in the empty house. That's right; mom and dad are both at work! She thinks to herself. I have to call 911!
She runs to her room and grabs the cellphone off the floor. Instantly she dials 911 and sits there listening to it ring. Meanwhile her whole body is shaking violently. She is terrified; she is just praying to herself that he is not dead. Come on! Come on already pick up! Please pick up the phone! She then hears a click and a middle-aged woman begin to talk. The woman's voice is very calm as she says:
"Hello, 911 what is your emergency?"
Murasakis tries to calm down and talk, but her voice is still shaky as she says: "Hello? It's my brother. I think he is trying to kill himself! Please hurry, he isn't answering the door and I am really worried! What if he is dead, please help; I can't get his door opened." She quickly tells the woman all she knows and waits for a reply.
"Okay, Murasaki, please just stay calm and wait for the dispatcher to get over there." The woman says in a relaxed tone. "Now why would your brother do this?"
"Well, I…I he, umm." She says in a terrified tone, trying to keep calm. "I don't know why but ever since my other brother died he has been acting strange. When-whenever I tried to talk to him about it, he would just run away to his room." She stutters but manages to say.
"Okay, honey. I understand that your brother is most likely feeling lonely. Right now we need to make sure he is healthy, okay? So we will do our job, and you need to do yours, too. You need to stay calm and be there for him no matter what, okay?" The woman tells these words of advice to Murasaki calmly and clearly.
"Okay, I understand." The younger girl says in much calmer tone than before.
"Good girl, now you stay there and wait for the ambulance, and in the meanwhile I will call you parents and tell them about the situation. So, don't worry about that."
"Thank you so much ma'am!"
"Before I go, I have one more question. Is there a key that opens your brother's door?"
"Umm, Oh yeah! I think there is a key in my father's desk." Says the girl with a hint of hope in her voice.
"Good, now would you be a dear and go look for it, if you find it be brave and open his door. Stay there with him and wait for the police to get there, okay?"
"All right, I will! Bye!" The girl doesn't wait for a reply as she throws the phone and runs downstairs to her father's study. She opens the top drawer and grabs the key that opens almost any door in this house. She then continues to run upstairs and all the way down the hall to Yūutsu's room. With her hands shaking, she attempts to open the door. Her first attempt is a fail as that calmness she got from the woman over the phone disappears into thin air. Her hands are too shaky, and she can't keep them still as she tries to unlock the door again.
I have to hurry; I wasted too much time on the phone. The girl scolds herself in her mind. Even though that time she spent on the phone felt like ages to her, it was actually only a few minutes. Please! Yūutsu, please be okay in there! The girl thinks as she finally manages to open the door.
Her mind instantly goes into relief as she pushes the door open. But, that small bit of relief was short lived. Her eyes go to her brother, lying on the floor in a pool of his own blood. In one hand he holds a knife. But that is not what shocks her, what truly shocks her the most is his wrist. It is deeply cut and blood is still gushing out of it.
The boy is passed out from the loss of all this blood. His eyes are closed and he looks like he is in a rather peaceful state. But, his abused wrist and all of the blood around him suggests otherwise. If Yūutsu's loses anymore blood he will die. The girl drops to her knees and starts to cry uncontrollably.
"Why? Why did you do this, Yūutsu?" asks the girl, not getting an answer. The only thing she hears is the sound of sirens wailing outside the window. She still has his hand in a death grip, as she brings her head up and looks out the window. She sees the people rushing in through the door, as they quickly make their way to Yūutsu's room.
The girl can count at least five or six paramedics as they attempt to fit inside the boy's tiny room. Then in a flash they pick up the lifeless boy up and put him on a stretcher. Immediately pressing a clean towel onto his wound and rushing him out to the ambulance.
Murasaki's brain is still attempting to register everything, as hands reach out and guide her down the stairs and outside. She is still in a state of shock, so everything is a blur to her. She hears voices but all she can think about is her brother who is at deaths doorstep. She stands there watching everything go on. Finally, her brain catches up to the current events and she realizes that the police are already investigating the scene. And her brother is being loaded up into the ambulance. In the next minute she notices her parent's car pulling into the driveway.
Everything happens so quickly. The boy is whisked away to the hospital in the blink of an eye. Reporters are on the scene asking the girl and her parents "what happened?" They don't give them an answer, but instead the get in the car and drive off to the hospital. Murasaki explains everything to her parents, as the make their way to the hospital to find out the fate of their beloved son. On the way there they hope and pray these solemn words:
Please let our dear boy be all right, don't take his life away from us.409Please respect copyright.PENANA4bZWjY3eT4
