Daniel smiled like nothing strange had happened.
"You shouldn't touch the books," he said. "They remember."
"Excuse me?" I asked.
Before he could answer, the mushroom let out a low hum. The ground shivered beneath my feet. Every book hanging from the trees swung at once, pages fluttering wildly without any wind.
Then they all whispered my name.
Not loudly. Just enough for me to hear it over my own heartbeat.
I took one step back.
"Nope," I said. "Absolutely not. I'm failing the assignment. Ms. Dai can deal with it."
Daniel laughed.
"There isn't an assignment," he said. "There never was. That's just how the dream gets you to keep walking."
My stomach dropped.
The library dissolved around us. Trees folded into shelves. Shelves bent into hallways that stretched farther than they should. Every clock on the walls read 11:23 p.m.
They all ticked at the same time.
"So..." I whispered, "how do I wake up?"
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"You don't," he said. "Not until the library finishes reading you."12Please respect copyright.PENANAAcVei7kdHT
