1.Mindsight (Eyeless vision in near-death states):
The documented case of people born blind who could see clearly with extraordinary detail during a Near-Death Experience or Out-Of-Body Experience.
The paradox:
Visual processing needs the optical nerve and visual cortex in the brain which blind people don’t have. They saw clearly objects around them that they knew they could not see.
2.Veridical perception during cardiac arrest:
Documented cases show patients that have been under anesthetic or have had a flat EEG (complete lack of brain activity) saw clearly what was going on in the room or elsewhere.
The paradox:
They could not have possibly seen and remembered things if the area in the brain responsible for sight and memories was dormant.
3.High-Functioning hydrocephalus (The “no brain” paradox):
There exist patients that lead perfectly normal lives with high levels of intelligence and have obtained advanced degrees all despite having a brain with up to 95% of its volume replaced with fluid.
The paradox:
These patients should not be able to perform everyday tasks and have normal intelligence due to the total amount of actual brain tissues lost.
4.Blindsight:
A condition in which a patient with cortical blindness cannot see but can somehow respond to visual stimuli. Blind patients can somehow avoid objects in their path but have no visual awareness of them.
The paradox:
Blind patients who can see are not actually seeing.
5. The "Hidden Observer"
A strange phenomenon can occur when a patient is hypnotized to block pain. Under hypnosis, the patient becomes unaware of painful stimuli and reports feeling no pain. However, in some cases, the patient can still describe sensations or events that they consciously insist they were completely unaware of.
The Paradox:
This suggests that there may be a second, hidden level of awareness within us. While the person's conscious mind feels no pain and remains unaware of the stimulus, this "hidden observer" appears to detect it. If this hidden observer were in control, it could experience the pain that the conscious mind cannot.
