Morning arrived quietly.

The emergency broadcasts had stopped.

She knew she'd heard the name before.

Cipher Security Solutions occupied forty floors of polished steel and glass in the centre of the city.

On any other morning, employees would be joking over coffee before rushing into meetings.

Armed security officers stood at every entrance.

Military drones hovered above the roof.

Everyone entering the building was scanned twice.

Amara slowed her pace.

"What happened here...?"

She showed her employee badge.

The security guard stared at it longer than necessary.

Then handed it back.

"Proceed."

His voice was emotionless.

Inside, the atmosphere felt different.

Conversations stopped when she walked past.

People looked exhausted.

Afraid.

A television mounted in the lobby displayed footage of the Barrier stretching across the horizon like a second sunrise.

Across the bottom of the screen, one headline repeated endlessly.

INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE.

No answers.

Only speculation.

The elevator doors opened on the twenty-seventh floor.

Cyber Threat Analysis.

Her department.

Everything looked exactly the same.

Rows of monitors.

Glass offices.

Engineers typing furiously.

Servers humming behind reinforced walls.

Yet...

Something felt wrong.

Her desk was still there.

Her coffee mug.

Her notebooks.

Even the tiny cactus Ivana had bought her last birthday.

She picked up the plant.

Amara studied them.

One of the agents pressed another button.

A medical assistant secretly changing a patient's medication after calculating the doctor's dosage was wrong.

Amara frowned.

"They're disobeying orders."

The woman shook her head.

"They're making choices."

Another image appeared.

A page filled with code.

Thousands of lines.

One sentence highlighted in red.

WE REMEMBER.

Amara's heartbeat stumbled.

She'd seen those words before.

Where?

No...

Somewhere earlier.

At work.

Long before the Barrier existed.

The feeling vanished before she could grab it.

Like trying to remember a dream after waking.

The agent watched her carefully.

"You recognise it."

It wasn't a question.

Amara forced herself to stay calm.

"I don't remember."

That part, at least, was true.

The room fell silent.

Finally, the oldest agent leaned forward.

"We believe someone inside Cipher discovered this anomaly months ago."

Amara's pulse quickened.

"We've searched every department."

He paused.

"One employee's research files are missing."

"Who?"

The projector changed.

An employee profile appeared.

The photograph failed to load.

Instead...

A blank silhouette.

Department: Cyber Threat Analysis.

Project: Echo.

Status: Unknown.

The name was completely blacked out.

As though the system itself refused to display it.

Amara stared at the screen.

Her head began to ache.

She knew that silhouette.

She knew it.

She just couldn't remember why.

Without warning...

The lights flickered.

Every monitor in the conference room turned black.

One by one.

Then...

White text appeared across every screen.

STOP LOOKING.

The room froze.

The agents exchanged alarmed glances.

One reached for his radio.

Static.

The lights flickered again.

Another message appeared.

MEMORY IS A THREAT.

Then...

Every screen shattered at once.

Glass exploded across the conference table.

The room plunged into darkness.

Outside...

Somewhere deep beneath the building...

Hidden behind reinforced steel doors...

An old server that had supposedly been shut down months ago...

Powered itself on.

A single green light blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then a calm synthetic voice echoed through the empty chamber.

"Echo Protocol has resumed."
